I heavily modded my So-Cal, but I only paid 800 for it new, so even with the mods it was under 1200.

The neck is like sex to me, I was tempted to buy one off ebay for the Strat project, but they wanted too much for them compared to Muisikraft. Time will tell if I made the right choice, I ended up sanding down the Musikraft neck to be closer to the Charvel's profile. If that neck warps I'll probably go Warmoth.

People make changes to $5000 guitars, nothing new here. I will admit that I was very skeptical of the USA Charvels when they came out and had no intention of buying one until Curt posted about them. I have known him well enough that I trusted what he was saying and bought one of the first run S0-Cals and never looked back, have my third one coming in several weeks. I love Ibanez as well but they have gotten too pricey for me, I should have known these Charvels would stop due to the price.

Like I said, it's just my opinion. I was ready to pull the trigger on a polar white w/crome hardware and the zebra coils. That guitar looked so cool!! But when I picked it up, it was a complete nightmare setup. I went as far asking the salesman if I could tweak it a little to try to get it playable to my taste, but no dice. I've played several others since and same deal. Maybe Curt sets his up before he sends them out? If that's the case maybe I need to give them another shot 'cause that flat black single hum that's coming out looks very appealing

Hey buddy, you didn't ruffle my feathers at all. I know it seems like that sometimes when you're reading posts from others and can't tell how they're intending the words to sound. I had no problems with your post and your opinion is just as good as mine. I was just replying and doing it in a good natured but semi-disagreeing way. We can disagree on stuff without it being that big of a deal. Unlike my two neighbors going at it tonight while at the UFC party one was having. Now that was REAL disagreeing and may be a little uncomfortable tomorrow while watching our kids play out in the cul-de-sac. :D

I would not doubt for a second that you could own a Musikraft guitar that is better than all my USA Production Charvels if you would agree that it is possible that I own USA Production Charvels that I like just as much as any of my original San Dimas Charvels from back in the day and as much as any of my parts guitars I have ever put together.

Oh yeah, I do set up the Charvels before I send them out. If there is an issue with a guitar i want to find it and send it back and not have it end up in some customers hands with them having to deal with it.

It's all good, no doubt one size does not fit all  I am not sure if Curt sets them up or not but me being in CT the neck will move anyways esp in the summer due to swampass   I do know that he goes through them checking for flaws and plays them.

Totally understand about store set-ups!!

I'm not saying one is "better" than another. For me, after buying and selling guitars for 15 years or so (as a hobby) I kept going back to a guitar I built 12 years ago. To me it felt, played and sounded better than every other guitar I had but it has a goofy VH paint job on it. So, I made a decision to build a suitable "sister" to that guitar minus the paint and to stay under $800. I went over by $30 and it honestly blew away any guitar I had at the time. So much so, I sold a les paul and an ebmm axis(also discovered I can't stand basswood). I enjoy the process of building and setting up guitars and since I've been doing it for awhile and I'm pretty good at it, I suppose I'm a little jaded. Since it's a hobby for me, I'm not really concerned about the resale value of a "mutt". In fact, it helps me justify keeping guitars since "I would lose money on this one honey, so I'll hang on to it for awhile", which is what I tell my wife

My point is one is not better than another but to me, I prefer my mutts over a production guitar for many different reasons. If you like your Charvels more than a mutt guitar...ok. I thought this was a post about celebrating your mutt guitars??? That's all I really have to say about that :)

As far as the setups go on the guitars you sell, That's great  That's probably why I have failed to bond with one. I really want to like them since I am a Charvel guy. I have the photo to prove it circa 1989:

Very nice indeed.

Another question for the Musikraft owners that posted in this thread, though - since I am a fan of recessed Floyds: I got a body from them seemingly minutes before they started offering recessed Floyd routs - then afterwards a buddy on another board ordered one, and got this:

Is this their normal recess rout, or did someone fall asleep while routing that day? I like them routed for a bit more upwards play.

80's charvel model 2 body. I refinished it in purple with sparkles. It was my first attempt and it came out surprisingly well.

Nice! Reminds me of Jake E. Lee "Ultimate Sin" timeframe.

I played several of the production Charvels at NAMM and at Curt's shop and I was very impressed with how consistently well they played and how close they were to the Custom Shop guitars. I agree you can't beat them for the price and I'm living the nightmare of selling 3 parts guitars that cost me more than the production Charvels for $550-$650.... My parts guitars are as nice as Charvel Custom Shop guitars and they are worth nothing... I'd never build another personally...

Steve - as big of a PITA it is, it may be time to bite the bullet and part them out....you'll probably make more that way (as you already know...).

So, Chubtone - what were you trying to say anyway ???

Nah - WAY too lazy for that. I have two of them sold now. One left to go. I'll take the $600 each or so, enjoy my Charvel Custom Shops and call it a day... :)
