Man that sucks bro :(

All I know is that if I'm shipping a package, that package is gonna be packed so good that you could do an air drop from 1000 ft, especially for a fellow formite where we don't have a feedback score. I just can't believe people can't seem to pack properly, they need to go spend a day at UPS or FedEx and see what goes on in there

If he's any kind of man he'll pay for some tubes and send back a little extra cash for your inconvenience...that would be acceptable in my book with no hard feelings

Good luck

Hey Max,

I didn't see this thread until just now, so I don't know what's been edited out and what hasn't. I logged into Rig-Talk tonight strictly to see if your amp had arrived yet. The pics you sent in the PM were utterly shocking, my heart sank when I saw them. And as a fellow amp-whore it made me furious inside. That was an amplifier that I had many good memories of. I'd gigged with it extensively and I knew you would appreciate it now that my gigging days are mostly over.

I've shipped 3-4 amp heads before (Laney GH50L to someone on this board actually). I've never had to wrap tubes separately. Ever. Had no problems with shipping this way. For anyone unfamiliar with this particular amp - that tube covering on the top of the chassis? It's made of fucking metal. It's HEAVY. It's screwed directly to the chassis and almost indestructible. The way the amp was packed - I used the same 2" thick commercial packing foam that we use to ship our shock-sensitive fiber optic equipment in. I'd completely surrounded the amp with it. It was sealed off with duct tape all around the box lid. There's no way in hell the amp should be in this sort of condition after it was packed as such. I've shipped out quite a LARGE amount of computer and networking equipment over the past year (hundreds of servers, net load balancers, fiber optic switching equipment, etc...). All of it being infinitely more fragile than this metal-encased point-to-point wired amplifier.

What I find EXCEPTIONALLY curious, are those plastic bands that are surrounding the box. I did not use those when I packed the box to ship out. The box was in good shape when it left USPS. I'm thinking somewhere along the way, that thing fell off a truck, or had a refridgerator fall on it or... SOMETHING. The white plastic bands were most likely affixed after the package was damaged by the shipping company in order to keep the cardboard together in a quasi-cube shape.

This is COMPLETE bullshit. Unfortunately Max, I don't think a "Fragile" sticker would have prevented this in any way. I can completely understand you looking for someone to blame and trust me, I would be every bit as angry about this as you are if I was in your position. So I completely forgive any sort of ill-will you may or may not have conveyed in the original post.

I'm ABSOLUTELY going to cover the cost of new tubes for that amp. Doug's Tubes has a decent selection of 6SL7s FWIW, and I've dealt with him in the past for these. The Ruby EL34s that were in there previously most likely would need to be replaced soon anyway. Call Trace and ask him how much a matched set would cost, get Trace/Doug/Whoever to send me a copy of the invoice, and I'll send you the cost of these tubes via PayPal. I'm not doing this because you posted this on the forum instead of PM. I'm doing this because I realized after I'd already sent you the return PM a few minutes ago that your damage claim options might be limited, and I want to show some good will since you've had to deal with this shit.

It appears that the circuits are still intact. The transformer looks like it was shaken loose from its mount. I'm thinking that replacing the tubes and resetting the transformer will put the amp back in a playable state. Like I said in my PM, I'll be in close contact with you, so please use my work email address that I sent you in the PM as I can answer that faster than anything PM'd or posted here on rig-talk.

We'll follow up this thread when we've reached a mutually respectful resolution.

Class act, all the way.

Did you read shreadhead666's reply?

It's responses like this that illustrate why this thread was a bad idea.

Yup.

Shredhead is a good guy to deal with and calling him out before dealing with it privately is bad form. Period.

I don't care how good you pack something, if the freight guys try hard enough the screw your package up it will be screwed up.

Glad to see shreadhead666 taking care of this professionally, hope all gets resolved.

To the OP, your reasoning is flawed  I still don't get how you think this is not calling him out. If you want advice there is something called being anonymous about it, you get your advice and no one gets burned, including yourself

Yeah... this thread wasn't necessary. I would deal with shredy based on his reply.

Meh... cut him some slack. I know he's not the ONLY one here that's ever sent out an email/thread/whatever in an extremely angry state of mind. ;) I don't fault him for being angry at all. These things happen unfortunately.

Lay off him. Max is a good guy. I didn't feel "called out" in any way so there's no sense in trying to throw him under the bus. Someone busted his stuff and he was angry, case closed. I'm handling it from here guys. Will update the thread once everything is resolved.

Sorry, my bad...I didn't read through all the posts.

Seems like shreadhead is one cool dude, I went from feeling bad for the OP to now feeling worse for shreadhead :aww: I can now see that this thread was not a good idea, nor was adding my 2 cents

The choke fell off and caused all that damage swinging around by its wires. While it looks like the box is beat up, the choke shouldn't have fallen off. It looks like the screws were too small and pulled right thru the mounting ears or the screws fell out. If that amp was dropped I would expect to see a bent mounting on the larger output transformer or the OT ripped right off. The larger mass of the output transformer makes it the first thing to get bent or ripped off when an amp gets dropped. Chassis will get bent to hell too. The choke is much smaller and doesn't have as much weight.

I never pull tubes and as others have said, a fragile sticker wouldn't have helped a bit. I've had boxes arrive here looking worse with no damage at all.

You know, that's as good of an explanation as I've heard; but it wouldn't seem like that choke had enough room in there when it came loose to actually get enough momentum to break a tube like that? Weird. But that's the best explanation I've heard thus far I guess. Hopefully once we get the new set of tubes in there and the choke is re-installed it'll be back up and running.

UPDATE:

Paul chipped in $200 for the cost of the tubes and shipping!! WHAT A GREAT GUY (as I STATED BEFORE!!!)
I can't thank you enough paul you do what you say you're gonna do, and that's why you're the best!!!

I humbly, and honestly thank you from the bottom of my heart for helping me out. You rule man!!!!

So did shredhead666 ever reply to your PM or did you post this without hearing from him first?

Not putting a fragile sticker on the box doesn't mean a thing. I never do that either and no problems. Not removing the tubes isn't a problem either. I've done that a million times with no issues. As a matter-of-fact, it seems to me that most or all amp makers ship amps with tubes installed.

It all boils down to the packing.
FWIW, we do not ship with the power tubes installed. Pre-amp tubes, yes. Got both new Mesas and VHTs that came with all tubes installed.
