Preamp tube replacement (Einstein combo, but not specific to

Hi

Sorry to post such a stupid question but this is my first tube replacement. Also sorry to post this here aswell as the amp forum but no one replied at the amp forum and it's been over an hour.

I want to replace a preamp tube or two. I know how to do it in theory I guess but physically I'm worried I'll damage the tube.

So I've take the cap/spring loaded cylinder off. Do I also take off the preamp tube 'ring' that surrounds the tube? I've tried to put the tube in without taking off this ring but haven't put any force into it as I don't know what I'm doing basically-- but I did make sure that as much as possible the pins were aligned correctly.

By the way I have successfully taken out the V1 12ax7 so this question is purely about putting a tube into the amp.

So do I take off the surrounding ring or not?

Any other tips?

No, definitely do not remove the plastic ring on the tube. This is a permanent part of it. Just line the pins up (there's a "missing pin" on both the tube and the socket, this is how to line them up) and press the tube straight down. Perfectly straight, no angles, and no twisting/screwing - just straight down. There will be a bit of resistance but it will settle in and have a snug fit. That's it!

Thanks for the input. I was talking about the the metal ring that surrounds the socket on the amp but all the same- guess I should leave that alone!

I've tried again with quite a bit of force but it wont go in. I suppose I could push harder but like I said I don't want to damage the tube and I especially don't want to damage my amp. It goes in halfway quite easily, past that it wont budge.

Any more hints for the noob?

Take off the metal cylinder and leave the rest alone please. Pull - and look out for the 9 Pins when you push it back into the socket.
