My Axe II (Mark II not XL) has been my only amp for some time now. Longest I've remained with a single amp actually. Love it. I'm an amp tweaker though. Always changing knobs, messing with sounds, it works perfect for me. I've owned other axes in the past (ultra, other IIs) the sound was never there, the firmware updates keep making everything better, every update is an upgrade. It is most definitely at a place where it is more than satisfying. Even the feel is getting closer. Great stuff.
From what I'm given to understand the II is pretty much the same as the XL, the XL just has more memory, and the II patches are backwards compatible. Thanks man....interesting viewpoint from a dude that's owned them all and sold em and then liked this one.
You've got it, they don't sound different at all.
And you're right-I've owned nearly all of them (too many). For me the presets don't do the axe justice. You really have to dial stuff in. Doesn't take too long to figure it out but there is a little bit of a learning curve. Depending on the preset and according to my ear, I can get anywhere from 80-95% of the tone that I am after. All at any volume level you want. Considering the fact that the number of tones to dial in are nearly endless, it's really a great deal. If you are more of a set-it-and-leave-it type of player, someone who only uses one or two tones, the axe is probably not the best option (although still not a bad one).
I still GAS for other amps when I'm messing around on the internet but then I'll go play my axe and feel more than reasonably satisfied.
