pro's using "budget" gear

depends on the budget gear - some budget gear is awesome

if you suck, it wont matter if you play budget gear OR pro gear

if were talking about tone, everyone makes the implicit assumption that gear is only going to matter if you dont fucking suck
This is so true, and frankly why I don't worry about the opinions of people on forums. Generally their mouths are writing cheques that their asses can't cash.

Unfortunately this is very, very true

there are a whole bunch of guys on forums who have a ton of opinions and not a lot of chops or experience playing music to back it up

The last two times I have seen Ty Tabor he was using the older Orange Crush head w/ two 4x12 cabs, a Line 6 HX effects, and a MIM Strat. It sounded great. Even his early tones until Dogman were the Lab Series so not what most would consider high-end then either.
I was just going to mention Ty! That is basically my gig rig. I was using the Super Crush 100 combo but now have Orange Dual Baby amps.

I got one of those MG100HDFX heads. They are GREAT death metal amps.

Nuno and DSLs is another good example.

Pretty much all the good tones of history were done with gear that was relatively pedestrian at the time. It really wasn't until the late 80s that gear started to become unobtainium, and its kind of funny to think that with most bands, if you were able to chart a plot one line being better songs the other being "better gear", those lines would probably grow further apart rather than closer.
He even ran a Boss GT-8 for his effects at one point. I think it was when he was doing the Rihanna gig.

Dude at my church uses a Squire Vintage Mod 70s Tele stock...... Dude sounds better than the guy using a TGM......

Kim Root likes using stock MIM Charvels on tour...... And sounds amazing too :dunno:

I don't really see people as playing cheap gear or expensive gear because I played some real basic stuff for most of my time as a musician.

I used to have a MG50DFX. It was an okay amp, I guess, after upgrading from a Zoom 202.

I left it at some guy's jam pad once and he started avoiding and dodging me till I played collection agent and showed up at the guy's workplace. When I finally got to the amp, its cone had blown, and so had the transformer.

I play live regularly, no "pro" by any means, but I do session work. I recently used a Squire live for 20 shows.

I grabbed a cheap mid 2000s Squire Showmaster 7 and popped in some Duncan Invaders and re-fretted with massive frets. Did some electrical work and shielding and it rips.

I seemed to annoy a few people who approached me afterwards to ask what guitar I was using. I think they where expecting some rare custom build considering the rest of the band had high end instruments. When they saw the logo, they seemed let down. However I thought it was great to see people try to listen with their eyes. Great guitar.

Interestingly enough you hardly see pro's with Epiphones, save for some exotic (jazzy) models perhaps, yet LTD's are plenty and probably more ubiquitous than ESP's.

I'm pretty sure Ron Jarzombek used the Johnson J-Station to record the Blotted Science stuff; hell he may still be using it for all I know

I screenshot this so the next time I call one of those types out and you wanna give me shit for it again I can show it to you.

I actually tried that thing next to a Digitech Genesis 3 (which I bought back then) and the POD 2.0... Sounds like some guys I know that make decent sounding records, all with an early 90's Alesis SR16 drummachine.
