PRS Archon 100, is it a good amp for modern metal?

Love it! I like the demo Emil Werstler (Chimaira) that's one of the exact sounds I'm going for!

For me that amp sounded just like the demos. But of course super clear in the room.

My next amp.....without a doubt. Got all the rest of my Unicorn amps now.

LOL. These were everyone's #1 for modern metal right after they came out and now the Rig Talkers are passing on them? They seem 100% on target to me from the clipz. Never played one though.

That's just it, I don't see too much of these amps or hear about them too much anymore. What's the deal with that? A friend of mine just got a 5150 III 100w....do you think the archon can hang with that?

I think so. Keep in mind, you are comparing a 2 channel amp to a 3 channel amp. Other than that, the Archon is an amazing amp that is very flexible... but if you are only looking for the thing that the 5150 III does... then just buy that. You can get them cheaper used.

The thing about the evh is I'm not sure about the quality in comparison to higher and amps like the PRS

I've owned a 5153 50 for 3 years, then bought an Archon 100 and am now selling the EVH. No doubt the EVH gets heavy as hell, and channel 2 is pretty dreamy, but to me the Archon just feels like the next level. The cleans are unreal, far superior to the EVH, and the lead channel feels more refined with better response and clarity. IMO, EVH ch. 3 gain above 1:00 becomes unusable where the Archon can be used all the way up to, but maybe not at, max gain. No issue at all getting ultra saturated tones, but a different style of aggressiveness compared to the EVH. Be aware, Archon ch. 1 does not do edge of break up well.

I've noodled around on the Archon's 50 watt mode but found it less inspiring than 100 watt mode, volume being equal. Not sure if that is a realistic comparison to the 50 watt head though.

To me the 5150 III is a Corvette and the Archon is a 911 Turbo. The Corvette has the power and the balls, but the 911 feels more refined and inspiring!

-I don't know man, a friend of mine has a 2017 vette, he let me drive it, at 70 something mph on the interstate he says "she what she will do". So I floored it, and it broke loose, 700+ horsepower in a Corvette is a force to be reckoned with, sure the EURO's scoff at it being " low tech"..... But all it does is kick the asses of there "super cars" at a fraction of the cost, low rev horsepower, you can tweak those little small displacement motors all you want, wind them up to 14,000 rpm, stick a fart pipe on um so they sound even more annoying,

-"there's no replacement for displacement "-

-back to your regularly scheduled rig talk-

I can confirm that one of Mailmans old Archons absolutely slays - it's in loving hands in my living room right now. Purrrrrfect for modern metal.

The new Corvettes are sexy as hell, I'll give you that. But I'll stick with my analogy :D

Go to about 1:45 in this clip
I believe he says gain is at 1 o'clock
Depth noon bright
Switch on

You could darken it up and tighten it but that the basic
Gain structure

Nice

From the clip, it definitely seems to have a nice aggressiveness in the voicing.

Ya it's not my clip but they get pretty mean
I would use maybe a little less highs but no question the cut through a mix

Yup.... that's an accurate recording.
I had a Diezel VH4 at my house I owned when I got the Archon. I could dial the Archon in to the Channel 3 of the Diezel.
Did blind tests. No one could tell what amp was being played. Just killer.

Again.... My next amp. :D

Hows the eq on the gain channels? It doesn't have an active eq does it?

The Eq is not active just regular passive
The most powerful control I would say is the mids in conjunction
With the bright switch

With bright OFF you get a warmer darker tone like the video above of Tremonti
With bright ON it more upper mid bite like the clip I posted
It can also go mid scooped if you wish

-these where on my radar when some people said there's a obnoxious-(I wanna say mid spike)-that couldn't be dialed out, I believe one of the people saying this was mailman? correct me if I am wrong, but do you think you have a solution to the problem now?

-what speakers come in the ARCHON cabs?

Nope. Wasn't me. I love the amp as is.
I played mine thru my Randall cabs with emenince Super V speakers.
Amp just breathed fire.

Fluff mentioned a mid-honk in his video on the Archon.

Can't say that I noticed it when I played it. To me, it sounded great. I played it right after a KSR Ares (through the same V30 loaded Zilla cab) and preferred the Archon (that may have been a mismatch between the guitar and the amp though). To me the gain channel sounded how I would have wanted my Roadster to sound. Enough gain without fizz, super chunky feel on palm mutes and tight enough low end without a boost. The clean channel hangs with the best.

On a German forum I read from several people who had loop noise issues which could not be fixed by PRS and therefore they returned them. No first hand experience in that regard though.

and to the original question: it can surely do modern metal tones. I usually use the same riffs (KSE, Trivium, Mastodon) to test all amps to see how clear they stay and the Archon passed the test with flying colours.
