PRS guitars - is the stellar rep real or hype?

Not a dentist, but I did visit my dentist yesterday, does that's qualify to play a prs? :D

Said you bought another one; I had a REALLY hard time not snagging the silver one today lol.
 
Although I am not a prs guy and love my old les Paul's, the consistency and quality control , attention to detail overall does seem to be higher with prs. Not nearly as many duds or lemons passed trough their line.
 
My Marsden is head and shoulders nicer from a fit and finish standpoint than either of my new Gibson Trad Pros. I had a couple years ago. Sad.
 
I see them compared to Gibsons a lot but I think its hard to define what the Gibson tone is anymore because theyre very inconsistenly made instruments. Theres a lot of bad ones. I went to GC about 5 years ago set to buy an LP and I must have played 10 guitars before I found one that naturally rang and had any life to it.
PRS are waaaay more consistenly good sounding. I've never picked up a bad one. Like any guitars there's always some that just speak to you when you play it and thats one you should try and keep but honestly, for me, theres no comparison between the two anymore for overall workmanship and tonally consistency.
Im noticing the word "consistency" keeps popping up here
 
I have played a lot of different PRS models, really wanting to like them, but they just don't feel right to me. I think they look great, and don't sound bad. I know a lot of people love them, I just don't get it. One think that really seems off to me is the neck joint. Can anyone give me a legitimate reason why they have this huge block of a neck joint?! If it were really beneficial other companies would be doing something similar. You would think if you're spending 3-8k or more they could throw in finishing the neck shaping!
 
I love my Custom 24 (it'd be one of the last guitars I'd ever sell). I'm really interested in the HollowBody II. They seem like pretty sweet guitars.
 
I too have had a good bit of experience with the se line I got one of there new cu 24 se's for 375 brand new threw in a tusq nut locking tuners and put some suhr aldrich pups in it and it was a very nice affordable axe it played better than the ce-22 bolt on prs I had for awhile I think they are a great value as for the american stuff I have personally played I do find them a bit hit or miss espicially the hard tails that don't allow for you to adjust the intonation I mean whats up with that. They definatly make some stellar guitars all the ones that were "miss" for me seemed to come from before the year 2000 so maybe some just don't age well or a certain time period was weird many had this underwater kind of sound that was all mids when played next to other axes. I will say I think their dragon pickups are really nice and smooth
 
Anyone got any new PRS toys??? I'm GASSING bad for a original run 1958 single cut for sale here locally..

Sold the Singlecut McCarty-burst today, and have the Korina McCarty for sale too. Keeping the SC58's though...too much awesome there.





 
I had never liked these guitars much and never had one "speak" to me until I picked up a 07 Royal Blue Custom a few years ago. I stole the thing from a local pawn shop and planned to flip it but after taking it out for the 1st time at practice it floored me playing it live. I have rarely played out anywhere without it since and it's been about 3 years now. On the trem stability I use the trem a LOT and it's every bit as stable as any Floyd or Wilkerson I have ever used.
I thought I would hate the 5 way rotary now love it never thought I would get used to a 10 radius board now am quite comfortable playing it. None of that would have ever happened except the thing just spoke to me as a player in a way I can't describe using it live.
Here she is it's a 07 Custom 24 the stock HFS and VB pickups with the 5 way rotary wide thin neck , Brazilian rosewood board and Pau birds. Seen prettier but on stage there is just something about the way this one responds that makes me always pick it up instead of something else.

Here she is live through my Zinky Blue Velvet combo and the only effects are the delay and a wah. The song was spontaneous and this was recorded with a little Sony SX750 just sitting on a chair in the front row of a Church service.

And another clip with a different group this time running my 120 watt Peavy Ultra + head through a old Fender 2/12 and the only effects used was a cheap Berringer delay and Reverb in the loop + a wah. This was recorded with a Zoom Q-3HD sitting at the sound desk.

Here is yet another clip from yet another group I play with song was spontaneous and I was playing the PRS through my Jet City JCA 22 Head effects were a Supernatural verb and a Boss DD-7. Recorded with the Zoom Q-3 HD.
 
I've been through a bunch of PRS models, almost all awesome in their own way. The one that has stuck is my Stripped 58. Everything about it is just right for me. That said there's always room for other great guitars. A new Suhr Modern has my Stripper on the bench lately.

The one I played was so awesome man. $4k is just too much for me right now though.

PRS totally deserve their stellar rep. Every new one I've ever picked up has been in tune, had a great setup,played really well, and have had great fit and finish. They put out consistent, high quality guitars. You may not dig the pickups or whatever, but that's more personal preference than a reflection of quality.

I'm looking forward to picking up a used Floyd 24 sometime in the next couple years.
 
I bought a Custom 22 earlier this year after many years of lusting after one but not really being able to justify the purchase. The build and playability is absolutely superb and totally justifies the price. After a few weeks, I decided that the default HFS and Vintage pickups were a bit "too rock" for me so replaced them with a set of Bare Knuckle Mules and a custom wiring scheme.
