I know they're meant to do different things, but looking to shred, and play clean stuff. I think the 408 will be easier to play (doublecut and lighter) but both have great soundclips-any advice from the PRS experts here? Thanks!

Neither !!!

I just posted a thread with my new PRS Metal/Floyd...

Grab one of those.

It screams...

I just checked out the floyd one today! Was nice but above my budget!
Can the tremonti cover clean tones ok?

I have a 408 and I sold a Tremonti. If you are considering a 408, I suspect you don't play Death Metal. :D

Here is what you gain... an amazing variety of tonal options in one guitar that you can't really change the pickups in without some doing. This is important to consider.

This guitar sounds like a PRS but shares some tonal characteristics with an ES-335, Les Paul and maybe a tele in some situations. Not a strat so much. It has an amazing rock sound... I mean just the best sound for me ever. Through my Dual Rec high gain with modern voice it can be mean as hell. I LOVE this guitar. I suggest that you take some time and play one.

The Tremonti was awesome... it was a 10 top with birds but it didn't sound like a PRS to me and I wanted it to sounds like a PRS.

Naw man... Tremonti all the way.

+1 here. As with most things, it really just depends on what you want out of the guitar. The 408 is a damn nice guitar with lots of tones in it. If you're looking for ultimate versatility, then go with the 408. If you're looking for a solid hard rock/metal single cut, go with the Tremonti.

I had the tremonti and LOVED it. I sold it to buy xmas presents for the kids a couple years ago. Would buy another in a heart beat. Have any of you guys tried the Clint Lowery PRS?

Scored a used 408 WAY cheaper than I though it would run me! I'll let you know how it goes-thanks guys!

That's a sweet fiddle. :)

You mention a tonal characteristic of an ES-335.
I have a PRS semi hollow clone made by Tradition, good Korean made brand.
I bought it used for a song. It's really amazing how good this thing sounds and plays.
The really interesting and cool tone is playing a semi hollow with really high gain. It's beefy and a very unique tonal quality when playing heavy rock and metal style. You can't get that tone from a solid body through the same high gain.

I've been really interested in getting a real PRS semi hollow to hear if it's that much better or if this knock-off is just really that special and unique.
It happens. :)

408!! i own one, and its awesome! very versatile! and have an amazing neck!!!!

i really like the pick ups also!

not vintage sounding...
