I guess the moral of the story is we all think it sounds awesome and plausibly could be any of those things (I've had a C+, III, and Studio Pre and all could pretty much sound like that).

That album release was when I discovered them and I went to see them at a small venue thinking no fucking way will they be able to execute that album live. Mind blown.

Same. Heard Pull Me Under on the radio and had to buy the CD. Saw DT at The Alrosa Villa. Same place that Dime bought it.

Dream Theater played a club show on this tour on a night that the local band I was in at the time was booked in the club for the week. So we got to ‘warm up’ the crowd for them - and then play the midnight to 1:00 set after they were done. This was when I was deep in my Mesa phase and played with a pair of Mark-IIIs and 4x12 Mesa slants. John immediately commented on my rig and tone after we got a quick line check through the PA before hauling our backline off to the side. They absolutely slayed that night - every member nailed every note. I remember they were extremely nice to everyone - little if any drinks before or after the set. Just super relaxed, confident with zero cockiness, consummate professionals. I was completely blown away. At this age, I wish I would have known to focus on those ultra-rare ‘once in a lifetime’ experiences more.

I was going to say, when the first distorted guitars come in, they sound like I expected, but once the actual riff kicked in, there was some actual bass in that!

Such ridiculously tight double tracking on this!

I wonder how many guitars are making up the intro? Best I can tell is 2 acoustics and a clean electric with a shitload of delay and reverb. At the beginning of the phrase, it's either the reverb/delay that's got a few notes stacked into it or there's a keyboard sound on the downbeat.

Holy sheep shit batman !! That was killer. Really tight but full. A lot of guitar parts in there I don't remember hearing in the full blown song. Really cool.
