Anyone ever tried their hand at building some of these for home studio ?

Thinking of giving it a go with some scrap lumber.

I had a set in my old studio that i built. They work great, but they are HEAVY AS FUCK!!! ...LOL

If I had that kind of time I would just play my guitar, you must be retired :D

Yeah, I'm getting my home studio sorted right now. I have several 2'x4' acoustic panels hung already.

Have some of the 12"x12" acoustic foam tiles coming in from Amazon tomorrow.

Thinking of using some scrap lumber from building the panels to construct a few small tiles of these diffusers to mix in with the other acoustic treatments.

In my country, we keep retired in cage.

Yeah, making those is a TON of work, and they are heavy as hell.
Also, the height of the pieces is NOT random. There is a sequence to it that you need to follow. You could probably find that info on-line, but otherwise they won't work as expected.

For the money ( and time ) this is a better solution for diffusion:

Go easy on the thin foam. It only absorbs high end, and too much will kill your room. Broad-band solution is much better.
If you have the DYI bug:

You can also buy the rigid fibreglass at building supply outlets and use wood for the frames.

Quadratic diffusers are awesome, and relevant, if not necessary in any project studio that is serious about mixing.

Yeah, I started making two small ones. Tedious, to say the least.

Thanks for the links. Will check them out this weekend!

Waaay back in the day we made some of those wood diffusers using balsa. Totally random height and placements, glued to a sheet of plywood.

Yeah, liked FusedBrain said, there is actually a mathematical formula to the height and placement of the blocks, based on the frequency you are dealing with.

I'm gonna keep it random - just like my guitar playing.

Where's the "quadratic" come into play (is that like quadratic equations?)?

Hook up a variac to it so you can adjust the amount of room sag... yeah, dat's da ticket.

Try to keep reflective surfaces if you can. Wood/tile floors are awesome! You can always mute a wet room with throw-pads, and other objects. Nothing worse than a dry recording atmosphere; when you don't want one. To prevent standing waves, erect a movable partitian.

if your building panels, don’t waste money on those foam panels. Frame 2 foot by 4 foot Owens Corning OC703 an cover them in a fabric of choice with adhesive spray. You can get them local for less than $1.25 per square foot

Agree, I would not do the foam panels. I had them for years and then built my own, total difference, I mean drastic difference. Here is a short video (there are tons on YouTube showing how) showing how simple it is. I made 29 of them for a total cost of about $400. That would have been thousands had I purchased ready made commercial ones.

And here’s a shot of my home studio once done:

Covering the back wall with fully-stocked bookshelves has always worked for me.

Important to vary the widths and heights of adjacent books if possible. I've always laid mine out on a per-category basis, which ensures "randomness". Some folks stack their shelves to look purdy; this is not the way to go here.

Obviously this is the lowest-tech, cheapest solution, so I figured I'd point it out.
