I'm looking for a pretty versatile amp. I want a solid clean tone, and a pretty "gainy" OD tone. I know the Shiva has amazing cleans, but I've heard mixed reviews about the OD. I can boost it with my Fulltone OCD, but I was really just trying to get a feel for how much gain it has on tap. Can you guys give me some examples of the tone on channel 2?

Right now I'm looking at the Shiva and the Mesa Boogie Mark V.

Thanks!

The Shiva 20th has allot of gain on tap with the boost engaged. Thick, smooth, and round tone. Excellent amp. Even better with 6550's. You cannot go wrong.

I have a Shiva with EL34's. your best bet would be to get a version 4 OCD, use the volume all the way up and barely any drive, put your ch2 knob at 1 o'clock for most of your rhythm drives, and use the OCD to take it into interstellar overdrive. It remains tight and will give you metal gain. When going to single coils or weaker humbuckers adjust the gain knob to a higher setting. The OCD works good because it cuts just the right amount of bass going into the amp to keep it tight when maxing out the gain.
Boss overdrives (too much bass cut) and straight boosters (too much bass still in the signal) don't work as well for this purpose, trust me I've tried everything.

BTW when I use a hot enough p/u like a JB, I can get enough gain when cranked for a pretty decent lead tone, but with the ocd (Vol-full, TONE-to taste, DRIVE - whatever is needed) it works well. I do have the newer Shiva with the bright switch also.

I have the version 4 OCD, I actually run it with my Vox pretty much how you described. The Vox just isn't made to have the gain I want...good cleans though.

You don't need a boost with the 20th. Trust me.

Haha, I may not...but I'll have it on my board just in case ;)

Yep. Seems to me the 20thA series of Bogners came off the line with 'everything intact' and in no ways needing a little extra this or that.

I'm hornin' for a Shiva :jerkit: Who woulda thunk it??

Peace,
V.

Definitely. There is no Shiva in the 20 Ecstacy. It stands on its own. And does so very nicely.

How much are the 20th Ann. Shiva's?

I've seen $2700, and I've seen $2300...I'm hoping its the latter.

There's one in the classified for 1850 shipped. I paid 2070 shipped brand new from a dealer-non reverb model.

Wow, thats not as bad as what I was expecting! Good to hear, I wanna make a run over to Fat Sound Guitars over in Cary, NC. They have one with reverb...I think its $2700. I don't really need the reverb though.

Pull out some cash and see what Stu will do.

What's the consensus on reverb vs. non-reverb? I'd imagine the circuit would be purer and maybe a bit rawer without it?

Not sure because the non reverb modell still has componenets of the reverb on the pcb. The holes just have plugs in them where the reverb components would go in the chassis. Same chassis.

I don't really need reverb, although I'm sure the verb on the Shiva is top notch.

There was a Shiva EL34 head that went up on Ebay for about $1400. Don't compare the 20th version as being the same amp - it is not. It would be like the difference in sound between a DSL100 and a TSL100, probably greater because of the KT88's.

I'm not too familiar with DSL's and TSL's. What kind of difference? Less gain, darker, smoother? I haven't played either yet.

Regular Shiva and 20th Ann. are two different amps. I would go with the 20th if I had to do it over again BUT, I am happy enough with my regular Shiva and a simple boost to keep me happy for a long time.
The 20th has a lot more gain on tap, a voicing switch that shapes the gain channel, better clean channel with more gain, and runs on kt88's. Basically the next step of what the amp should be.

Do you think it would be worth my while to go ahead and save up and get the 20th?
