Rackmount attenuator

Hey guys

what are my options with rackmount attenuators? I know the Weber ones can be rack-mounted, but it doesn't list how many spaces they take up (they look rather big). Then there's the Holdsworth unit... but I hear that it's not too healthy for your guitar amp. Any others that are affordable to a college student that is sick of digital and wants a tube amp in his dorm room?

Thanks!
Andy

If you are talking about the Rocktron Juice Extractor, it's a load box and not an attenuator (like Hotplate, Airbrake, Powerbrake). I've had one for years, its very cool. It only puts out line level signals so you'll need a power amp to power speakers.

Ah ok, thanks for the clarification
You haven't had any problems running a 100W head into one?

Well, there`s this one, it`s good, but discontinued. I believe Groove tubes made a revamped 1U version of it later on.

It`s also a surprisingly nice speaker emulator. You can either run it as a load, take out a line signal into another amp, or attenuate 6, 12 and 18 dB when running it in line between the power amp and speaker.

Hmmm... The Groove Tubes version you're referring to.... is that the Groove Tubes SEII by any chance? Looks like it...

thanks for the heads up there!

I know there are also the Palmer units, but I don't have the dough for those.

I believe Ultimate Attenuator had a rackmount option. Last time I checked though (which was a while ago) I could not find that option anymore, but I KNOW they used to offer if they do not right now.

Get a Blackstar HT5. Tube amp for bedrooms or dorms...

Sorry man, not looking for another amp right now.

And the Ultimate is totally over budget.

Nope, even 120 watt Orange amps with no troubles.

That is very possible, I remember reading a review of the SEII in Guitarist magazine a couple of years ago. :)

yeah.. .sadly enough that unit seems to be even more than a Ultimate Attenuator.

Too bad they don't make a rackmount version of the Hot Plate... I'd be all over that.

    I've had one of those for 18 years and counting, I sold it to a good friend once, but got it back years later. I've had great results with it. I do wish it had a vol knob instead of step switches for attenuation

Looks like I'll be shooting for the Juice Extractor or SE100, unless anybody else has any suggestions.

Thanks so far guys!

Yeah, I`ve had mine for a while as well. I bought it from Olaf 7-8 years ago.
It was probably easier/cheaper to make firm dB for attenuation?

I don`t see myself parting with mine either, it`s a great piece of equipment. I`ll have to try to incorporate it into a slaving system one of these days. I have everything needed, save for a rack case big enough for a rackmounted Mesa, 2U for the SE, 1 for the G-major, and 2 for the SS power amp.

A 10U rack case.. Hmm
