It uses a "powertube" of a 12au7. What would happen if I put a 12ax7 in it?

No clue but I love mine the way it is and the loop makes it great for a 1w power amp

the power is a tiny bit different between the two, check the specsheets to see the differrences.
With that said, i personally would just try it, should not be any issues. But if you blow your shit up its your fault not mine.

12AX7 will sound shitty in that spot. You could try 12BH7, 12AV7 (5965) , or 12AT7.
The AX7 will sound more gainy but in a bad way.
