Randall V2? Need some input ASAP.

I have a chance to buy a brand new Randall V2 with a Randall RS412XL with V30's for $1000 flat. I have a few questions for ya'll with experience with these amps. I know the Randall cabs rock (used to have an older one ) Basically this would be replacing my Dual Recto/Recto Standard cab. I'm never really all that happy with my Recto tone, as I have the thick sound of an Uberschall to contend with.

So:
1. Does anyone here have experience with these amps? Tight low end? Thick overall sound? How are the cleans?

2. Is $1000 for the halfstack as good a deal as I think?

3. What are these amps best suited for? I've always liked the flexibility of the RM series, but I'm kinda wary about a mainly-solid state amplifier holding up in a live situation.

4. How are the mic eliminators on the cabs?

5......anything else?


I get to try it out on Thursday, and possibly play a show with it on Friday, but I wanna know what I'm getting myself into before I waste the time integrating it into my rig for rehearsal/the show. It'll probably only stick around till I find my dream amp (thinkin Rivera) and at the very least, if I dont like it, I could probably flip it for more then $1000....

I can tell you about the head ->

My other guitar player had one for a while. Here is what I remember about it -
- Distortion was pretty much only good for metal (if you are in an Anthrax cover band, I think it can hit Scott Ian pretty damn well). Try to dial it down, and it sounded like crap.
- Bass was overwhelming. It either had so much bottom end that it drowned out the bassist or was thinner than Calista Flockhart after running a marathon.
- Cleans - sounded OK, but probably would need to be soaked in effects to sound good.

After a while, he ended up selling it for about $700. Had a hard time getting rid of it. This was last summer, so before the economy totally went down the tubes.

I haven't played one personally, The post above is actually the fist negative review I've seen on them so far, I know they were impressive enough that Gary and Lee from Exodus signed on with Randall playing those amps......

Cabs KICK ASS! period.

heard that one a bunch of times through sponsored artists. it always has that "fake" sound too it. Better than you would expect but in no way replacing a tube amp. Amott has never played it he just put his name on it to get the royalties from sales.

Well, on the Godforbid, Archenemy tour I worked, He had them plugged in and onstage but he was using a Krank that was in a rack offstage. Maybe there was the occasional use but the endorsement was about the royalties. It is not his full time amp.

I dunno why anyone would by a Randall if they want Mike Amott's tone. The guy has been using a 5150 for his main tone since the mid 90's.

I guess I just wanted to point out that it is primarily a metal amp. Not particularly useful for any mid-gain tones.

Also, my friend tweaked settings and used it through a Line 6 cab (which I know sucks), but it sounded pretty similar through a couple other cabs.

Give the Randall MTS line a look. It's more than the V2 deal, but some of the tonez are amazing.

I love the MTS stuff. Here's my issue: with a 3 or 4 channel head, I know I'm limited to those 3 or 4 channels....but when I have the option of swapping out pres for different sounds...I could see myself buying 4 or 5 of those RM4s and throwing them in a rack

I'm thinking of going with either a Rivera Knucklehead (love it) or going with a Triaxis + JMP-1/Randall RM4 into a VHT 2/90/2 with a big ole rack.....Oppppppptiiiiionnnnnsssssss

Not only that it appears he already jumped the Randall MTS stuff and both brothers are definately back on 5150's.
