Ok, I have an opportunity to get hold of a Quickrod for close to $1K. What do you guys think? I'm seeing mixed reviews about them.

Mixed reviews? That amp is killer.
Highly recommended. Love mine.

I've owned 2 of them, neither was brown enough. Very stiff amps too...unforgiving, no "sag".
YMMV

I know this has probably been asked a millions times, but with all the new amps available, I'll ask again. I'm looking for an amp that can get close to early VH. Preferably under $1k and 50 watts or lower.
Ceriatone Chupacabra 50W: $1085 new.
Done.

Nitro.......are you out there? Where is Nitro? Is that you?

Early EVH is in the 5153 50w on the blue channel with the gain at about 10-11 o'clock. All Eq knobs at noon. If you can't get it done with that, well...

it is Canadian though so maybe we just do it better?

So you think enough time has passed and that we have all forgotten? We haven't :gethim:

We've been trying to convince him of this, but he's worried it has too much preamp gain. I tried to explain how the GAIN knob works to no avail... :D

Yeah, in theory you could dial back the preamp and just krank the master on anything with a good crunch channel and be in the ballpark..

Wait a minute! What day are we today?? Oh that's right.. it's Friday. Need I say more:

Canada Rocks! :D

Crate GFX-212. Might sound like a joke, but it will nail that early 'brown sound' pretty well. There was/is this guy Jeff Florentino that did some online VH lessons many years ago under the name 'Vin Heuton', and he used a Crate GFX-212 and sounded awesome. Google it and report back with your findings. Made me pick one up and I used it for a couple years just for that purpose. Under $200 all day long. I'll also say a Splawn Quickrod (plexi mode is fantastic) and a new Marshall DSL because I have both of those at my house right now and have used them both for VH stuff as of late. The Splawn might be way too tight of an amp for VH but still in the realm of that tone I'd say.

Quickrod and DSL both have half power switches ;)

I'm going to stop trying to tell people who want a VH tone to buy a 5150 III. All they do is argue. So I'll have the tone and people can go buy an 800. Which is the amp that kept me from buying a Marshall for 20 years. That's how shitty the 800 is for VH tones. Yeah yeah, I know there are good ones. I never played one. They all have no gain and no bass. All mids. Which is good for a lot of things especially live. But it ain't got no VH II vibe.

I did two versions of On Fire. One with a Peavey 5150 and one with the 5150 III 2x12 combo. I was way too loud with the Peavey. And realized I could turn the gain up a bit. I was so focused on it not sounding fizzy that I missed the mark a bit. So that recording is useless. And I used the iPad video to record both. With the 5150 III it sounds killer. But the file is too big. So I need a new way to record. I don't want to mic it. Done that. I want the room sound I hear from the amp which is VH all day. Not trying to get VH I per say. Just a good VH type sound. I'm getting close to making good on my threats to play VH on a 5150 to show how good it sounds.

And it's all in the fingers. 1989 I was playing a white Les Paul custom through a Peavey Bandit 75 and thought I sounded like Dirty Movies from Fair Warning. I was trying to decide which to buy first. The amp or guitar when a salesman reached over my shoulder and turned the volume down on the amp. I walked with nothing. But the tone blew me away. Now the reality is I'd never buy a solid state amp. But that day it was all working for me. Point is with a DSL-100 or a 5150 or any decent modern tube amp there are good tones to be found. If your C. C. Deville that's who your going to sound like. My style is '90s Ed. And I don't care who likes it or doesn't. Actually I'm more like if '90s Ed played Alice in Chains riffs. But that's what comes out when I play. So I guess some play a 5150 and hear only the fizz. Not VH and blame the amp. Might be you that's the problem. And I'm not talking to anyone in particular. It's just frustrating at times to see good advice given and ignored. I see it a lot.

Now I'll go play VH II licks with my Class 5 Marshall through a 5150 4x12 and shut up.

I thought the answer would be obvious with the EVH 50w, but I guess that depends on what EVH era you are shooting for. Cheap solutions for various areas might include: EVH 50w, Soldano Astroverb, Marshall DSL. Check out this video:

What????? That's why you put a pedal or two in front of a 2203/4....I've never NOT gotten a VH vibe out of an 800. I had a 2205 that was VHII exactly. Should have kept it...
