Reb Beach says Kirk sucks

I think everyone involved in this thread is right. Starting with Reb Beach.

I saw Winger a few years ago because a friend's band was playing in the other room. I'll say that they were definitely very tight, great vocals, great musicians. Songs don't do a thing for me though. It's no secret that Kirk isn't the greatest guitarist on the planet, but I doubt he'd try and argue otherwise. That said, I really don't think a "better" guitarist would have made their albums better, likely it'd have made them worse IMO. Just my .02.

I've got nothing to add to this thread except to say that I've got nothing to add to this thread.

I'll always have an affinity for Reb since he was on the cover of the Guitar World I was in.

Now I've got something to add to this thread. I would argue that if you added someone like Guthrie Govan (who is technically waaaay better than Hammet) it would not work at all.

For me, most shrederrific music is horrible and does nothing for me. On the other hand, Leper Messiah, The Thing That Should Not Be or Disposable Heroes. Pick one. For me, is better than every single "shred" album ever released. Not to say that I don't enjoy some of that stuff, but none of them is in the same galaxy as Master of Puppets.

Reb probably shouldn't have said that, but its nothing that many people here and elsewhere haven't been saying for years. I would think that it would be tough to mind your Ps and Qs all the time as a famous player. I'm sure there are times when pro players would like to say what they feel like Reb did here.

Bottom line for me is that Metallica drew first blood by throwing darts at Winger in a video. Anything Reb or any other Winger member says at this point is well deserved (as long as its true). I've hung out with Reb on a few occassions and I can confidently say that he's as cool as they come...truly a good dude.

The best quote I heard about the Metallica vs Winger issue came from Kip where he said he'd like to see Metallica try to cover a Winger tune...implying that they aren't talented enough to do so. I would tend agree...love 'em or hate 'em, there probably wasn't a more technically proficient band to come out of the 80's than Winger.

If Reb's mad at anyone it should be Kip

Fwiw, I'd bet Kip is mad at Kip, for that particular lapse in judgement

 I don't see how they were any more "technically proficient" than most other 80s metal bands. I'd never deny that Reb can shred and even that they may be a tight live band for those can withstand the ultra high cheese factor (not me). To me there could be any number of bands that were more technically proficient than Winger.

They are definitely the most proficient at making cheesy turd laden albums though by most standards.

I can understand Hammett's view on running out of ideas, as that genre is pretty limited in the chord shapes and scale choices. Then they can't make the leap to include more technique, ie fast sweeping arpeggios, etc to spice it up metal wise or they are accused of being a different kind of sellout. They have a signature and stick to it, as the fans won't allow anything else.

Megadeth managed to do it, but then again they don't sell the volume like Metallica or fill the big arenas.

Ya, it was a bit over done, but he is right. Kirk is overrated, and could be replaced very easily.

Anybody in Metallica could easily be replaced. Metallica died along with Cliff Burton.

I can say Reb used to come into my vintage guitar shop back in the 1990s and was always humble and cool and I loved watching him play sitting 5 feet in front of me. I sold Kirk his 1958 Goldtop and delivered it to him at a show in DC and he was an ASS. So, Im with Reb. But both of them pale to the true master Willie G.

I actually owned Winger's first album and had some good songs on it. I was actually 17 when "17" came out, so sounded great. I guess not cool sung from someone over 21 though. :) Reb has always had kickass tone and solos though. As far as the band though, things started going south right around the time of "Can't get Enough".

people can always be bitter towards more successful peers. Just the way ppl work.

My initial reaction was, really? this guy is a great guitar player in a band 99% of america has never heard of. The other guitar player is a really good guitar player in a band 99% of the world has heard of.

Bitter jealousy can be the only reason I could think of. I could care less for either band.

I will add I love the Reb Beach Suhr Guitar

Dont you think one person WANTS to be recognized, has not been hounded by ravenous fans and therefore is more at ease around ppl. The other probably is hounded for signatures and pictures 24/7 in public and gets tired of ppl quick?

just my thought on that. Could be as simple as kirk is an ass and reb is nice, too. Who knows! cool story though.

No one tops Alex Lifeson though

LOL, he played in Winger! I'm sure he's a great guitar player, but his band SUCKS.

Not for nothing but Winger most certainly didnt suck. That band had tons of talent and great songs and were ruined not by metallica, but by beavis and butthead. you guys are funny. you sit here and bash kirk all day everyday, but when someone else does it...he is the asshole   At least Reb says what he feels. Kirk does play out of tune and has shitty vibrato. it's a fact. What does that have to do with how much money he has? Kim Kardashian could buy Reb too, wtf does do that have to do with anything?

Nope, Hetfield was as cool and sociable as any guy you would meet at the pub. So was Jason Newstead who bought a 1959 Fender Metal Guard P bass from me. Kirk was just a fruitcake.
