Not the cheapest, but I've heard Aracom makes best ones out there. Anyone have personal experience with one?

Yes. Absolutely...you can load down an amp and go into a cab, or; simply use this as a standard power amp for W/D or like you asked about (preamp pedal or preamp). Wait a minute, so you could also jam through this thing with a preamp pedal and power a cab?
