Hello all, longtime reader, first time poster...

I'm trying to satisfy my need for the right amp and can't quite nail it. Had a 2204 800 head forever, then switched to a Mesa Mk4 about 10 years ago... now i'm looking for that Marshall midrange crunch with a more modern (ie bigger & tighter) low end. Using Line6 PodFarm plugin for my demos, i'm digging their 800 model for the bulk of the sound, with a Diezel V4 blended underneath it for the lows & depth, but that combo isn't very practical to lug around. Tried Bogners, Diezels, VHT/Fryette, nothing gets it 100%. Really want to try a Friedman Naked but can't find one nearby (NJ). A decent clean channel would be great, but not entirely necessary. Any suggestions?

Thanks!
JP

The Wizard does sound great from the clips I just checked out, thanks! Def a little too much $$ brand new but i'll keep a look out for a used one.

On the cheaper end you could also check out the Laney AOR, Peavey Butcher, or Carvin Legacy. Or maybe something like a Bassman with something like a Crunch Box in front.

I'll check out that Laney for sure... never been too crazy about Peavey or Carvin products though, in general. One of my current amps does the Bassman/early Marshall thing well, Groove Tubes Soul-O 50 running EL34s, but i'm looking to get away from pedals and find one powerhouse for the studio & live.

I should describe my taste a bit... love Adam Jones' tone, but less mids for me... Billy Howerdel on the first APC album, but more raw and less processed... love Chevelle's rhythms, but something a bit looser & more organic than their tight Mk4 tone... Diezel V4 & VHT Pittbull UL were way too tight as well, whereas Bogner Ecstasy was too loose & flabby in the low mids. Shiva was nice but too soft, Uberschall just too much gain at almost any setting. VHT Pittbull 50CL might've been the closest so far to what i have in mind.

Main guitar is an '89 LP Custom with SD Pearlies in it.

Never had the pleasure of playing a Wizard. Try and Bogner Shiva

I know you said you've tried VHT/Fryette, but does that include the Deliverance? What you want is pretty much how I'd describe the D120 I played.

Phenomenal amp... No press. Shame. Killer amp, awesome engineering, fantastic customer support.

Sheevs is one of my faves... But the Wizard?? Daaaaaayuuum, these are indeed cleaning house and they're not just some Marshall circuit spin-off, they've got their own thing going on.

Just sayin'...
Namaste,
Mojo :salute:

No I haven't tried the Deliverance, but just read up on it and it does sound like what i'm after. Hoping the D60 does the trick, and the price sure is nice. Thanks for the tip!

Yeah, definitely check out the Deliverance. I have a JCM 800 and owned a couple of VH4s. The D120 blew me away. It has all the vibe of the JCM 800 but the thunder of the Diezel.

I'm digging the clips i've found of the Deliverance, very cool... not sure how this one slipped by the radar, might've assumed it was more of a vintage vibe compared to the Pittbulls, but i reckon this beast could hang with them for all but the tightest & heaviest of metal, which ain't really my thing anyway. Can't wait to try one out!

This all the way! Plus more gain if needed. Badass amp. No idea why I don't still own one.

I've played the CL-50 and a D120. Not very similar amps. Both are very dynamic (react dramatically to varying pick attack and volume knob changes) and there's a distinct VHT/Fryette growl. But the CL50 was like a razor while the D120 was Godzilla. I loved the CL50 except that it has a small sonic "footprint" IMHO. It sounded thin next to a VH4. But not the D120; that sounds huge.

If you can, I would say to try out a Mesa/Boogie Mark III that has simul-class. I have some EL34s running in Class A in one of mine, and it sounds like a better version of my co-guitarists JCM 800, and the Boogie has low end while still keeping the cut and bite...and that's on R2!

The only drawback is that all three channels use the same controls, but I can get some great tones by using the GEQ on R2 and the lead channels, and taking the GEQ out for cleans. Otherwise, you can just clean up the grit using your guitars volume knob.

There is a D60 for sale on this site.

I'd stay late JMP or early JCM800 2203's and run a Boss SD1 and GE7 in front.
