It's very important you read up on firewire with Focusrite. You have to make sure you get the one with the "right" firewire chip. I don't know if it's with all Focusrites but my Liquid 56 needed a certian chip.
Yes, I'd stay away from USB 2.0. It will limit what can do. For what you want, it will be fine but you won't have as much room to grow as you would with firewire. You should future proof your set up a little, that's how I always do. I've only used my OctoPre MkII once since I bought it in back in Nov, but it's better to be safe than sorry. IMO

Alright so I've decided to get a FW PCI card and go with the saffire series. Thanks for the help guys. I can probably get it all done under $500, which is still pretty cheap IMO. A couple weeks and I'll take the dive. One last question, what firewire version (400 or 800) should I get if I go with the Focusrite Saffire 24 or 40?

The 40 is on FW 400, actually all FW interfaces I've owned are 400. But, if you get a FW 800 PCI card you can just get a 6 pin to 8 pin cable to connect to the interface. I have to do that with my newer Mac Mini while my MacBook Pro has 400 only.YeahI":1e0prmdt said:

However, as there are a wide range of PC manufacturers, a wide range of FireWire hardware is used,
and there are some incompatibilities to be aware of.
Chipset Incompatibilities: The FireWire chip controls all data being streamed to and from the
FireWire port, and certain chips have been known to cause problems with connectivity. We would
recommend using either a Texas Instruments or a VIA FireWire chipset to avoid any such issues.
EDIT: it also says this:
We recommend FireWire 400-only, non-combo (i.e. not with USB AND FireWire ports)
Though it doesn't say anything about FW800's. I would say do some research.

I love MOTU stuff. I have one of their newer interfaces but I have been finding bargains on the 2408 interfaces all over the place. I currently have 4 of them and I paid 40 bucks for the last one off cl. The only bad thing about the older MOTU stuff is you have to buy their PCI card as well.

RME: Babyface Laptop, RME AIO Standalone, becauce they feature the lowest latency and can be used with a 32 buffer and are extendible quite easy (midi, optical out and in,
Another cool and cheap recommendation Echo IOx but you need a pc express slot for these (rare) and an additional DI (Radial Jeddi)
I feel the difference clearly while playing guitar and E-drums.
There are a lot of myths around.....
"Macs have lower latency than Win, Macs OS system is superior to Win7 making music, Firewire has less latency than usb, the Apollo has low latency (game changer) using vsts, the audio quality of the AD between new interfaces differs radically, Ipad is a cool real time music machine, latency depends on RAM, latest OS, processor speed, fast drives, thunderbolt will make latency dramatically less (game changer)...".. 
Every time you encounter these thesis and blah, you are talking to someone who has not done his homework and lives in the past.....simple as this!

I recently got a used Focusrite Scarlett 18i6 (USB). The reason I went USB is because it's compatible with my iPad also and it can run with Auria. If I ever want to record a whole band on the go, just need my ipad and the scarlett. It's running pretty well on my windows 7 laptop so far.
