On a huge prog binge at the moment, need recomendations to fit a pretty specific "sound" I'm craving more of.

Late 80s Rush
Early 90s Enchant
Fates Warning (John Arch and early 90s stuff)
Tommy Shaw (Solo)
TOTO (84-89)

The consistent theme here is big upper register soulfull singing, good guitar work, keyboards, atmoshpere, melancholy, good production and catchy bits.

Probably alot to ask as it's a bit specific haha

Ever listen to Lawrence Gowan? He’s the current singer of Styx but previously carved out a successful solo career in the late 80’s. His was the first name to come to mind based on what you are looking for. I saw him live about a year ago and he was excellent. So many hit songs I had totally forgotten about. Not sure how much play he got outside of Canada though. More pop keyboard oriented than guitar but really great atmospheres.

For Toto-ish old School AOR, check out Work of Art.

These Arch/Matheos albums are worth a spin. I love both! Might be more "modern" prog for you, but great albums, nonetheless.

Roy Kahn era Kamelot!!! The Black Halo, Epica, Karma and Fourth Legacy albums specifically. Listen to the title track to Karma to get an idea. That's one of my favorites, but there so many great tunes on those albums. Also check out Roy's band Conception. He left Kamelot and sang in church for years, but is back with Conception and I really dig their new EP.

I LIVED for Rush, Queensryche, Fates Warning, and Dream Theater in the 80s/90s. So when I tell you to check out Kamelot... "listen to me now and hear me lay-duh!" Kamelot was who mended my broken heart that lingered for years after 'Ryche shit the bed. They were THAT good with Roy singing. Tommy sings well too, but the music isn't the same without Roy there. Kinda like Ryche without DeGarmo. Both bands had peaked already, but those departures sealed their fate. I do like LaTorre on vocals for Ryche though. He's better than Geoff Taint has been in two decades... and he can drum!

Marillion are another band that I've loved forever. Maybe they're mellower than you're into. They're like early (Peter Gabriel) Genesis meets Pink Floyd.

Have you heard the Warrior album from the 80s? It was killer then, and it's still killer. Shame that was it for them. "Fighting For The Earth" was the single that got video play. Perry McCarty (the vocalist) did an album with Steve's Stevens' Atomic Playboys after Warrior.

What about Tarja era Nightwish? Love em! What about Saga? Love em! There's more amazing prog or prog-ish stuff out there than you can even take in.

I just got obsessed with Devin Townsend Project... and haven't this obsessed with a band since Kamelot, and Queensryche, Fates Warning, and Rush before that. Check out DTP's Hyperdrive, Seventh Wave, Deadhead, and other great tunes from him to get an idea. Not high register per se, but got much else of what you stated.

Awsome! I love Gowan! He was born here in Glasgow before moving to Canada. You are right about the melodies being atmospheric!

Interesting... I've always been a power metal guy (stratovarius, sonata, angra, rhapsody) but always overlooked Kamelot due to their cheese factor. So I'm trying them again and enjoying it, it's deffo more down the power metal side of things but I've already saved 3 songs so that's good news!!!

Marillion... I do enjoy but the voice gets me. Phish is a legend buy I need more soul and a higher register. He works really well for Marillion though.

Checked out Warrior and it's like old Maiden mix with Priest... which is awsome but not what I'm after.

Already a big HevyDevy and Nighwish guy so can tick that one off :D

I think these are all great but deffo don't have that soulful enchant singing with the Rush style backing. It's probably me being too picky haha

The new Lonely Robot album is fantastic....not sure if it totally fits your criteria but damn it's good

Now this is interesting! I will check it out

My answer to pretty much ANYTHING and EVERYTHING these days is to look toward Scandanavia (Sweden in particular), and Germany. That's where there seems to be tons of cool stuff happening.

I agree, Chris, especially for anything AOR through to metal.

Work of Art’s new album is okay. Can definitely tell the Survivor influence as one of the Survivor members wrote 4 songs on it, or co-wrote. There’s not any real pop out songs though, after 5 listens...I much prefer Lionville’s last release over the new WOA. Just me. But Robert Saal and the guys are super cool. Sent me an autographed cd of Framework

Will check out Lionville as WoA also leave me flat.

These are on the melodic side rather than prog, with strong guitar work - Eclipse ‘Momentum’ and Pretty Maids ‘Motherland’ or any disc from 2010 to now. Great gym soundtracks if nothing else, esp PMaids.

Eclipse and Pretty Maids are awesome on their recent stuff.

Couple things to go along with those - H.E.A.T., Coldspell, Art Nation, Nordic Union, Grand Design, Kissin' Dynamite, Reckless Love, and Bonfire's new(er) album "Legends".

When you mentioned Kissin' Dynamite, who I like, it reminded me of Battle Beast, Chris.

Also melodic and great guitar. That chick sure can belt 'em out.
