It's no different than miking any other amp. I'd like to hear the clips that turned out great with your SLO or Mesa in comparison to your Herbert clips. The only thing with Diezles is that you might need an inline pad before your mic, so they don't overload your inputs.

I agree with nBarts regarding the clips that sound good. A few questions. What is it you like about the other amps when recorded that you are missing with the Herbert? Some specifics would go a long way in trying to give some help here.

I have used the compensated out for all of my recording.
I was in a session with one of my Diezels, and the engineer brought out a Neumann U-87 mic. After he got it where he wanted it placed in front of the speaker, we did an A/B comparison against the comp out.
The engineer could not tell when the mic was being used or the comp out was being used, so from then on, I've used the comp out.
You don't think Peter would skimp on that feature, now do you?!

Well, first, make sure you need one. I personally need it with any amp I use, because I'm a loudness freak, however due to Diezels power & low end they seem to need more attenuation than other amps. I use Shure A15AS.
I don't know what's your preamp converter situation. Where is the gain on your mic pre? How high is the peak of the recorded signal?

im from lima ohio. i played in supercharger xtc, ive played chicago a few times. i teach 80 kids used to have a lot of you tube vids shredding, but ima nobody. but i truly think youre right. ive tried the levels many ways but the diezel comes through too hot. when the input is down the diezel signal is too quiet compared too other instruments. its has to be the diezel with my board. my other amps are not sounding that hot in the in put. i aslo used a radial direct box. u ever tried them. im talking between students by the way

OK..........I know the compensated out is very good and all but against a Neuman...and a real speaker?
I had one of those on my 2x12 Einstein cab when I was completing a project for Pixar back in the summer and it was just awesome! It didn't like my ISO cab though.....
Then we moved into a Royer and it was even better! It was great to have them play with all of the higher end stuff.
Funny thing was.....it came down to an older 57 that sounded great. We also tried a Neuman 67 (which I was shocked to see!) and that one was great as well.
We tried the compensated but it was a no-go for the heavier stuff.
Now...if you are playing cleaner, then I can understand.
