Recto rec C - 8K on HMAP

….and I’ll raise you with this. There’s a certain modder here that everyone raves about; killer amps blah blah…yep we’ve all heard it before. Got to hear one at a mini amp fest a few months back. It was only ok at best; very bland and almost like he took the JMP bits out of the Marshall and replaced them with sterile modern shit. A very boring sound and I’d pick ANY modded Marshall I’ve ever had over it.
But hearing guys here made me think it was Cameron-esque. Truth is, the 899$ EVH Iconic sounded better.
But that’s just me; ymmv.

No, I won’t name them. Nothing wrong with the amp, it just didn’t sound very good to my ears.

Who said anything about over the top gain? I’ve got a C and a C++ and I don’t play either with over the top gain.
Regardless, a top tier amp is still going to compare favorably to a lesser amp no matter how similar they sound. There’s still different levels of sound quality, and some amps just have “it” more than others.

I find the tonal differences to be the same as the differences with lower gain amps and technically many of my non-metal amps like my Gjika and Alessandro’s get similarly distorted when turned up close to max, it’s just a very different flavor of gain more suited towards bluesy and classic rock type stuff and fusion. Also incredible amps of course

I’m totally with you though on weedly noodly leads (part of why I never was an EVH fan), but I am one of the younger guys on here

Yeah sadly none of that type of gear on here delivered for me. It’s great that guys are supportive on here of each other, but sometimes honest feedback is also a good thing (maybe done privately) so they can improve and have a chance at longevity and competing better with the best stuff

Yeah I think regardless of how much gain an amp has or even for any musical instrument period, there’s commonalities in the qualities of all the great musical instruments. Typically a more complex, rich tone or detail going on around the notes and the notes connecting in more vocal/human-like way. This all makes for what I perceive as an instrument sounding more “alive” aka organic and feeling more connected and inspiring playing it. The Rev C and IIC+ have some of those qualities even with all that gain. Very few other high gain amps I’ve played can compete in that criteria. This doesn’t justify their price, but they are special to me at least
 
Ok, looks like 5k would be a good going rate for a RevC. There were two RevCs in the realm of 5-6k here in Germany sitting for months. That was like half a year ago.

Completely agree with your point on different levels of sound quality.
I guess the Mesa thing just gets silly in my opinion when your talking about 8–10k or more, for a 2C+ or an early Rev recto.

I’ve never played a Rev C, but I did own and gig a early Rev Racto that I bought used in 93-94 I think?
Great sounding amp, but definitely a one trick pony. To get a usable clean sound was impossible if you were switching back and forth during a tune.
 
Yes, it definitely gets silly at some point.
I just scored and shipped a Rev G Triple for a friend. Had it to compare to my C for a couple of days, and while the C is without question better in every way, it sure af isn’t $4000 better. :LOL:

I think the prices are even more silly for what Gjika’s, Jim Kelley’s, klons, real PAF’s, and many ‘50’s/‘60’s fenders & Gibson’s go for and some of those items are just as much of a one trick pony and even less functionally practical, but they are all exceptional sounding for what they are and to me justified by being 10/10 for that one trick rather than 7/10 at best for everything. I don’t like the prices either, but if I didn’t already have some of those items and wanted one, the prices are what they are sadly. This doesn’t make me think less or more of how they sound, it just sucks how pricy they’ve gotten

Agreed. I have a Gjika and I thought 6k was insane when I bought it. I had to have it though.
The last Gjika that Bob sold went for 20k. Crazy money for an amp, but if you want his amp, that’s the going rate.
I’m as guilty as anyone for buying expensive gear.

I live in the town where they are made and need to get my ass in touch with him just to at least hear one.
 
For whatever it is worth, I have the hermasson, and just used an amp switcher between my C/D/F for the last hour. They all have something a bit different from each other. I have debated listing the rev d, but I also like the damn thing a lot. They all have their own unique mojo. For whatever its worth I did not even like Mesas until I played the older ones--in fact they were my most hated amp haha.
 
I’ve considered just grabbing a triple recto multi watt and changing out the OT and calling it done. My max I’ll pay for an amp is what I paid for my mark III++ Coli and I won’t go above that for a single amp. Guitar? Sure. Amp? No. The speakers and individual components make as much of a difference and I can take a dog of an amp and turn it into a fire breathing monster easily.

Yep, it is what it is. No need imo to call it guilty. We like good gear. We may as well enjoy our passions as much as we can

It’s kinda like not liking a fruit till trying a fresh picked one. I find my Hermansson Recto’s to be a very different flavor than the stock 2ch Recto’s, but also in my top 4 or 5. Can’t wait for the Triple F one to come and screw the haters for not liking using that as a donor. Gotta make it as good as I can

I love the Hermansson and you’re totally right on the money. That thing is totally distinct from the old 2 channels. It has its own thing but damn it’s a great thing
