Red flag or not ?

Need some opinions, would you buy a new guitar that's been sitting in a guitar shop since 2023 that you cannot play in advance? I have found a specific Gibson that looks flawless (best top I can find for this model) but I can't shake the worry that there's a reason nobody has bought it in three years.

The shop advised it might be because of the slightly out there top. However, it does ring a red flag for me.

Cheers

Price is the same as other competitors, offered £150 off the guitar. Returns are possible but if it's a dud, I would have to pay return shipping. Which would likely cost me around £100.

Sounds like a win to me. A return policy shipping charge is better then being stuck with a good looking dud and costing a lot more than that in this market to offload it. I say go for it.

To me it would come down to "do I trust this seller for not selling a dog guitar with issue?" (esp bad playing/feeling one)
I've seen some pro sellers hold on to / not really advertising or pushing to sell some fantastic guitars they had in inventory for some time, whatever the reasons may be (don't really need the money? keep it for better market conditions / offers? like to have it on hands to play / look at? ... any combination of those? etc.)

If you're looking at around 100 for return shipping if it turns out to be a dud and no restock fee I think it's an acceptable risk. If the shop has a good reputation the risk would be lowered. Since the guitar has been sitting there for 3 years see if they'll knock off a little more money. They probably want the floor space for something newer and may be inclined to take a bit more off if it means finally getting out the door.

For a player, yes bc I know enough exceptional techs anything can be altered to the specs I prefer.

what year is the guitar? You said it's been in the shop since 2023. Is it a 2023 or older?

2023 Gibson was going through many transformations, with Cesar taking over. Not sure if quality or QC was an issue.

I purchased a use Gibson LP standard that had been modified (in a good way; pickups, coil split, tuners, pots, etc.) for a good price, sight unseen on Reverb. It was listed as late 2023/early 2024, 60s standard...I never bother to check. I'm very happy with the guitar.

make sure you understand the return policy, time window, terms & conditions, and what triggers a restocking fee before you buy

I was gonna say negotiate it before you get it. Hey I will buy it but no restocking fees or any other bullshit if I return it. Been sitting there for some reason….

Yes, I would and have done this before. Not a Gibson, I don’t own or like any Gibson models but that’s just me. I purchased a new Caparison and that had been out of production for 2 years and sitting in a shop for 2+ years at least. It came flawless.

JMHO there are too many Les Pauls hanging in nearby stores (unless you live way out in the country) to be ordering one sight unseen. That looks like a trophy wife which means she sounds best when you don't let her speak. Go find the ugliest used broad you can down at your LGS and I bet she can cook real good.

Unfortunately I live on a small island that has one guitar shop and no trophy wives in site. I have bought the guitar after getting some good money off, will let you all know when she arrives
