Rediscovering John Norum

Yeah, he's a great player. Didn't know he was married to Michelle Meldrum until just checking his wikipedia page..

I guess you've living under a rock because i mention him once a week on this site ;)

If you really want to see someone do the job right, find his live stuff with Dokken ! He just kills it in every way. Totally badass. Unfortunately now he plays a little more in the blues vein and less in the shred vein which is too bad because he had the goods..

Love the intensity in this old vid.. total shred with emotion in the beginning of this video. Probably an OD pedal in front of a Marshall and away he goes unlike us gear whores complaining about every little part of our tone..

In so many ways is he badass. I was listening to YouTube vids of Another Destination not two hours ago before I listed my Aldrich mod for sale. Mark took me there with him when he and John recorded the album when he had his original mod like mine he let John use. Norum recorded that album in one take according to Mark. That tone was killer on that album.

I'm pretty sure that live he uses 2205's..at least every time I've seen any concert footage he's got a backline of channel switchers. Underrated amp...

I thought Slipped into Tomorrow was his best work. Great songs, tone, and solo's...

Yeah 2205's with KT-88's for over a decade now.. i think he boosts the odd time too but fairly simple rig

John kicked ass back in the day. His first two solo LPs are where it is at!!

and here are two of many favourites from his solo work (the latter is a cover, with some good lead guitar):

Dude is really good. Love the playing and the tone

Does anyone else look at this cover and wonder what the hell Arnold Schwarzenegger is doing with a guitar?

Yup. JN's one of my faves too. Great phrasing, great tone, and just overall a great style. Probably one of the few guys that I know of that goes straight into an amp with no boost that ISN'T a gain whore like a Mesa or the like... Check out the "Love At Sheppards Bush" DVD. You can really hear him fighting (and winning) the battle with that amp.... How he can get that much power out of such a dry sound is just impressive.

No disrespect intended but he is ether boosting his amp or it is modded. Cannot believe he is getting that tone from a stock or unboosted Marshall

He has used pedals (at least recently) as well as modded Marshalls (but apparently not recently).

His rig for the last several years has been his Les Paul into a Crybaby to a Chorus Ensemble to the front of a JCM 800 and a Silver Jubilee w/ KT-88's but other than that they're completely stock from what John's said... He used to use the SDE-3000's but switched to the MXR Analog Delay after but as far as amps go they're completely stock these days.

Can't believe he is getting all that gain from a stock JCM800 with KT88s
