Reliced Guitars

So do people who buy reliced guitars take care of them? Just curious if they get upset at the first "real" ding. Anyone ever see a reliced closet/case queen? I dunno it just strikes me funny.
 
I've got some relic'd stuff...I guess I take care of it but I don't baby it like I do non-relic'd rigs. Last thing I'm worried about on a relic'd guitar is another small ding. But I don't get crazy and throw guitars or bounce them off the stage to begin with lol.

To me it depends on the degree of relicing. Some of the heavy reliced Fenders look like total fabrications and complete exaggeration of the original thing.

I like a guitar to look worn and used but not like it was dragged behind a semi truck.

I refinished my LP is nitro and intintially weather checked it. More dings means more play. I stoll polish it and use oil on the fretboard. Still perform fret dressings and wipe the strings.

I think Historic Makeovers does accurate, tasteful relicing as well.

Nash looks cartoonish and exaggerated. Bartlett has done some tasteful stuff at well. In fact, if I were to ever convince myself that the money was worth it Bartlett would be the guy for my LP Clone.
 
I'm less worried about dings on a relic-ed guitar. That being said I'm hard on guitars in the first place...I keep em as nice as I can, but after the first ding its game on. They're only tools anyway.
 
Yeah I just saw some reliced Fender's and Suhr's that are pretty expensive and made me think...
 
I once saw a band and the 2 guitarists were using "relic'd" Strats...the same model. The relicing done on them..I guess Fender uses some kind of template to do it...because they were done exactly the same. I mean the EXACT same wear marks and everything. I don't think it could get more corny.
 
When people see my guitar, the first thing I want them to think is "Man, that guy has been playing that thing everyday for 40 years and he apparently could never afford a case".
 
I'm not a fan of relic'ing generally speaking, but I do like the 'used-an-unclean-polish-cloth-for-20-yrs' look that is essentially swirled/ghosting - almost a satin finish but not quite. I am currently having a guitar built for me that will include this; to me it is more about wanting the guitar to feel broken-in than it is about it's appearance to others.
 
This topic again? One person's idiosyncratic choice which opposes with another's perception of logic. A rather fruitless and unsatisfying endeavor on the inquirer's part.

This is mostly my experience as well....relicing is so obvious it's cheesy.

If I ever find one I like, I'll consider any new dings to be authentic additions! Short of that, I'd treat it the same way I do the rest. Stay in case until I'm ready to play, annual intonation, strings depending on usage.

I think not! Not questioning perception or logic just wondering what others thought. Had nothing to do with choice I just was genuinely curious what others found. To each his own and we all have different tastes but this post has nothing to do with taste more about the way people "feel" about reliced guitars. I'm not on either side of the fence I could care less what a guitar looks like as long as it plays and sounds good. I guess it's like would you want a Rat ride or a showroom car? I dunno just wondered if people took the same care of a 4K dollar reliced guitar as they do a non-reliced one.
 
I haven't found a realistic relic and honestly I'm not interested in them. If I did I'd take care of them the same way I take of all of my stuff. I own guitars I bought in the 80's ans gigged heavily with for years and not one of them has the relic looked..used , yes, over relic'd no
 
I play my old guitars, or relic'd guitars, with a little more abandon and not worried about getting a ding or scratch. Took a $10k+ Huber to a gig once only to have the drummer knock a cymbal stand over straight into the front of the guitar. It would have sucked just as much on any of my guitars. :gethim:
 
Ouch! Well drummers do hang out with musicians. LOL... I would have freaked too no matter what guitar it was. They are just tools of the trade though right? I mean unless you are a collector.

Yeah, I just had Nik refinish it. Might not have refinished on a relic, but maybe - it was a pretty big gash.

And I bet both had a shiny new case for the guitars too. I agree, it's pretty corny. I can appreciate those who like it and there is obviously a market, but its not for me. That said if I try a relic'ed guitar and it speaks to me, I would but it. So I won't discount one, but I won't seek one out either.
 
Originally I thought that it was a tad bit lame or poserish but as yrs went by I warmed up to the idea. When you see a tastefully done relic like that of a few of the fender custom shop or some of those beautiful 59 lp builds, u can understand and appreciate it more. I prefer to relic mine the old fashioned way and I play out with all of my guitars as they are still tools. What gets me is when nobody will buy my old r6 because it has a few natural nicks and bumps, but if Murphy or someone put the exact same bumps I could charge double and same guys would now love the look of same guitar.

No, no, you've got it all wrong. Those weren't relics, the guys play in the same band, play the same music and have the same style. Their guitars just wore identically.

It makes total sense.
 
I have a reliced pick up truck for sale.

Only 2K above the price of a boring new factory finish! It looks like you actually work a lot!
