I just always think...isn't it my job to relic the guitar as I play it?

Relics are cool when you have spare parts, or just to mess around and learn how to mod guitars without fearing of messing up too much. Pre-reliced guitars are kinda meh... especially when they're more expensive than a standard one

I was under the impression the point of having a relic was more about the feel and tone of the guitar. I thought a well done relic adds mojo and tone.

I bought a "reliced" Viper 400 for like $260 shipped. It's seriously beaten but the frets are in great shape. Not sure I want to refinish it like I planned on when I bought it or just leave it as is. So far I'm leaving it. It's a one of a kind, Bigsby mounting holes and all.

Bob, Does a relic'd guitar have a tone to it or is it aesthetic?

That's what I thought. A buddy of mine has a 71 Strat that he gigged allot with back then. Its got allot of wear. The guitar has a feel to it. It feels like sweat and jamming. Nothing prefab. I was curious if a good relic can nail that feel I'm talking about. I offered him a good price for it. He was like never if you times that by 5

I'm less worried about dings on a relic-ed guitar. That being said I'm hard on guitars in the first place...I keep em as nice as I can, but after the first ding its game on. They're only tools anyway.

That's sort of where I am with the relics. My main issue though is the finish on the back of the neck. I keep extra-fine grit paper on standby. Also, high gloss tops don't do much for me. With a relic, there's no doubt that for the same guitar (with clearcoat vs. without), there is definitely some sonic differences and they are just more comfortable to play not worry about getting the first whiskey dent.

Used gear with battle scars is fine with me, but I have no interest in fake wear. That just seems pointless to me.
