Remember the theory EVH just didn't pay attention to Rhoads?

...I think Eddie was a little full of himself back then.

Yeah he's been doing interviews his whole career--the "back then" part is pretty unnecessary

Interesting story, but I never believed for a second that Eddie was not aware of Randy.

My relationship with Ed is not close enough that his ego matters. I didn't like DLR, as an irritating swashbuckler butt pirate type. But singers are easy to hate, for the most part.

EVH had a flashier band. Look at the number of women panting and creaming over DLR..

Ozzy? More and more like a bumbling idiot doing a Halloween persona. Not Randy's fault.

Randy did so many of the cool scale matching things. Always had a flow that I liked. EVH just had an instinctive thing going. Innovation.

EVH owns the stripes. RR owns the faded white LPC. I like the LPC. RR seems like the class act as a person and musician.

Flying High Again... Or Runnin with the Devil...

Just absolutely perfect hard rock songs. It was a great time to love electric guitar.

Rhodes is the man. Ironic that I have a Rhodes amp!

I bet an old Alpine LPC would be killer thru it!

Well, you have to keep in mind how mad Eddie must have been after Paul Gilbert stole his power drill thing.......

Sarcasm?

edward stole the tremolo thing from BECK,..there was no BECK and edward sitting there together ,...BECK as the teacher edward as the student,......edward stole everything he is known for,....including his most recognised trick!,..the tapping thing,... from ACE FREHLEY!!...(there's a clip on you tube showing frehley doing it in the 74-75 era)
dont forget,..GENE SIMMONS tried to promote VH,..made a demo of VH,...shopped it around,..there were no takers,..SIMMONS gave VH the demo,..and said good luck...(speaking of urban legends,..at this same point in time, KISS was in the studio recording ROCK & ROLL OVER...
and as legend has it,..it was edward that played the guitar part on christeen sixteen,..and as every thief does,..none of them tell you who they stole it from,......when VH opened for BLACK SABBATH in the late 70's,....TONY IOMMI accused edward of stealing from him as well!!!.. (GUITAR PLAYER MAGAZINE in the same time period)

BUT!!,...i will say this,...who here among us has never stolen a riff,..a blue note,...a phrase,..a something from another guitar player?...

I saw RANDY RHODES on the BLIZZARD OF OZ tour,....there was no hype about RANDY,...nobody knew, or cared who the guitarist for OZZY was,...this is gonna sound funny to most of you,..but back then OZZY was considered the closest thing to SATAN since ALIESTER CROWLEY,...not the mumbling,..bumbling,..MTV,..the OSBOURNES,.. we know him for today,...RANDY,..all 5'6" of him came out with that polka-dotted JACKSON (i never even heard of a JACKSON!) and just killed!!! everyone speakes of his "tone",..what he had gobs of was ferocity!! and a style that didnt exist in the electric guitar world at the time,...i saw VH on the WOMEN and CHILDREN FIRST tour,..edward was impressive,..but RANDY was a musician,...edward is guitarist,...i like more peanut butter and less fluff,...i lived the 80's,...and for the most part it sucked!,..well except for the bitches,...

ok,...i know this is a 80's loving,...spandex wearing,.. playing scales as fast as you can to impress other guitarist,...web site,..so i have my asbestos suit on,..ready to be flamed!!!

MERRY CHRISTMAS

Its like I've walked in to the local Elks club
You can always walk out.

After I finish my Tom Collins
Excellent choice! I'm sipping a Whiskey Sour...

Steve
Egg nog here. And before we jump back to the Elks Club commentary, I've liked it since I was a kid.

This is the truth...EVERY guitar player that we admire has stolen SOMETHING from a previous player, unknown or famous. No one is TOTALLY original..I don't care who you name. And who cares? They take it and make it their own..and we admire them for it. Just the way it is.

Uh yeah...some inaccuracies here...

Randy didn't have a polka dot Jackson...that was a guitar made by Carl Sandoval. Lots of players had tapped the fret board before Ed...even before Ace. I think it's safe to say Ed perfected it in rock guitar. Ace "copied" Ed's solo on Christine Sixteen per Gene...reason being, Ed and Alex had helped Gene with some of his demo's for the album "Love Gun" and they all liked the solo...this was when Gene was helping VH. In fact Gene tried to get the demo's with Ed and Alex released on the Kiss Box Set several years back but did not get permission from Warner Brothers at the time. Most guitarist...or at least the ones I grew up with were completely floored with Randy on the release of the Blizzard of Ozz. In fact everyone I knew hated Ozzy and bought the album because of Randy. He was the next step in the evolutionary chain of rock guitar. We were very aware of him, we were floored by him.

As for the 80's sucking...I guess it depends on one's perspective...Vivian Campbell, George Lynch, John Sykes, Vandenberg, Yngwie, Satriani, Vai, Jake E Lee, Norum, Demartini etc... Never before in my memory has an era produced so many great guitarists.

I've never stolen a single note. Every single thing I play is an original string of notes given to me as a gift from the gods. Never heard before. Not one. None. Ever. Forevermore. Nonetheless and baking power.

But this all brings me back to April 1, 1981, sitting at Hollywood and Vine waiting for the light when I hear "I don't know" blaring from the car next to me. I look over and what do I see? None other than EVH, banging his head and shaking his fist in the air as if he were in the front row of an Ozzy concert. When he saw me looking he seemed to panic and sped away.

Yea, I have to agree. FACT: rock guitarists definitely knew who Randy was as soon as Bizzard hit the airwaves. He was new and innovative, and we were in awe. When I went to see Ozzy in 1982, it was to see Randy, pure and simple.

As has been said before, the late 70s to mid 80s were a great time to be a rock guitar fan. There was a lot of great talent out there.

I'm no expert on tapping history, but it was around well before Ace and to a much greater extent than Ace did it at. Certainly Eddie took it to another level in a rock context.

Go to 1:30

Eddie this, Randy that. Ace invented this, Yngwie invented that. None of them were a hair on Ted Nugent's loincloth circa 1980...

I am sure EVH was paying attention to Randy. I think you would not have the ferocity and kick ass playing of EVH on Fair Warning, if he did not. One of the best VH LPs and best EVH LP IMO.
