Renegade head preamp tube change question

I have a Egnater Renegade head. While I really like the channel 1 (the clean), channel 2 (the OD) is a bit raspy/buzzy to my ears. I'm looking for more of a mild break-up/blues overdrive rather than the higher gain variety. I have tried running the gain low/master high, rolling off the treble, rolling off the presence etc. without any luck. Would changing V3 and/or V4 from 12AX7 to 12AT7 or 12AY7 help with this problem? I am running the head into a 2x12 Tourmaster cab and have tried it with and without the back panel on, with no real difference in the degree of raspiness. I really like the amp's features, but I'm ready to sell it because of this. Any help is greatly appreciated! :confused: :confused:

I would think that changing the speakers would make a huge difference, maybe something like beam blockers also. Breaking in the speakers might also change the sound. Maybe mellower pickups of course, not the super hot type. I haven't tried the tube swap so can't really comment from experience, but that would be cheaper than the speakers and cut the gain for sure.
 
Most definitely try pre amp tube swaps. You can always use a good 5751 to lower the gain.......and especially in the PI slot.

Also, power tubes can make a big difference as well. Do some research on them.

I have the same rig. The Renegade is one amp that needs good tubes. I replaced all the OEM ax7s with NOS ax7s and it transformed the amp IMO. Not saying you need to go NOS. Just dump the OEMs for something else.
 
At this stage of the game, I'm not sure that I want to dump more money into the amp. As much as I like the clean channel, the OD channel can't get "low gain enough" for me. However it does A+ mid-high gain and its flexibility is excellent. If I don't sell it, I might try some lower gain tubes in the V3-4 slots and see how it sounds. Thanks for the suggestion.
