Howdy all, haven't been around much due to being very busy building and designing new gear... Lots of new stuff is coming soon!

I thought it would be beneficial to repost this for the guys out west. I've been talking with Ted about a custom build for some time now and he's anxiously awaiting testing of the flagship Colossus amp. He'll have it for a couple of weeks and kindly offered to organize mini amp fest(s) based on it. They will be recording video and audio and I'll be sure to repost that stuff when the time comes.

If any of you San Francisco Bay Area guys are interested in checking out the beast let me know either in this thread or via PM. I will put you in touch with Ted via email and you guys can coordinate from there.

Thanks guys, I'm looking forward to getting more peoples hands on this amp!

Hey guys, some of you have already received a pm from me regarding this. Kyle from Rhodes amps is sending me a demo unit of his Colossus amp for testing. I'm going to have the amp for about two weeks starting sometime around the 16th, 17th. I thought it would be cool (and good promotion for Rhodes) to get some of the bay area guys from the forum together to check the amp out and give him some feedback.

If your not familiar with Rhodes Amplification check out this thread. From researching these guys a bit and talking with Kyle extensively I really expect big things from these guys.

Rhodes Colossus 100 Watt Head - brutal video/clip content

I have a studio room in Concord (east bay) which is probably about 45 mins from SF for reference.

I think it would be great to get a bunch of guys from the forum together from different backgrounds, styles and abilities and spend some time checking out the amp. I'm guessing we'd probably see some nice guitars as well.

If your interested shoot me a pm or respond in this thread.

Ted

According to UPS the amp will arrive in the San Francisco area (Concord) this Friday. Ted will have it for a couple weeks for testing, clips, demos, etc, then it will be heading to LA. If anyone would like to test drive it, let me know!

Here's an update from Ted on SevenString.org:

Since this has come up a few times via pm from those who are a bit time constrained or not used to playing in front of alot of people...

I'll be scheduling the demo sessions with just a few guys at a time. That will give everyone a chance to really play on the amp. It's not going to be a one shot thing where I stack 20 people in a room and start wailing on the amp LOL. I'd like to get groups of maybe 2-3 guys at a time so we can see what we can get the amp to do.

Gear whores unite LOL!!! Been getting pretty good response so far, if your in the bay area hit me up with a pm if you want to try out the Rhodes Colossus!

Thanks guys!

Cool! Want More clips!

" If anyone would like to test drive it, let me know!"

Send it to my house and Ill get all the guys in Seattle Together and then I could make a trip to Portland?

Here's another they just finished. It sounds like they mixed a little room mic with the cab mic on this one. The player runs through all channels and touches on a lot of different modes as well, really versatile demo. This might be the highest quality clip showing the most sounds on the net!!

What do y'all think?

Sounding pretty darned awesome. I wish it was dialed in a bit tighter sounding for the heavier clip in the first video. The midrange is nice, and it's quite thick.

Thanks! As far as I understand each player is dialing it in as they see fit. The second clip sounds better to my ears too.

One of these days I'd love to get an amp into your studio. Your clips always sound killer!

Interesting clips ... thanks for posting them.

Looking forward to checking this one out .... next week to be exact, here in Seattle.

I play several styles .... all of them. I am more interested in the clean and lower gain crunch sounds ~ because this is what the majority of guitar playing is about for me and the rest of the world. .... Funk, country, rock, blues, heavy, etc ~ all of these in modern and vintage voices I will be looking at.

I plan on running it clean, point of break up, crunch, high gain ~ scooped and midrange heavy. Seeing how the thump stays together and the high-end ~ smooth or fizz. ~ on each of the channels ~ looking at what voices it will do.
Focus, detail and harmonic content. Seeing how dynamic the channels are and how they react to the volume pot on my guitar. Note definition and separation with complex chords. Ability to do different tone shapes ... etc, the whole kitchen sink.

I will have my Strat, Les Paul and a amp or two that I am familiar with to do a direct A/B with all things the same in the chain but the amp.

Anyone that is interested in something I missed ??? or wants to know something particular please speak up before next week when I will be checking out the amp.

For anyone building a more complex rig Kyle has a few things in the works that near as I can tell covers more detail in needs and wants than most of what is available.

I must say it is really cool of Kyle to send his amp around the country. Not many builders would be willing to do such a thing. That says a lot about Rhodes Amplification and goes a long way with me.

Btw, have the tubes survived all the touring? What tubes are in it?

Any chance that it will be coming to North Carolina on its tour? This clip still haunts me and makes me consider parting ways with some of my gear to put in an order....

+1 I am sure there are more than a few of us who would love to check this out!

Hey Tom, thank you for the kind words. I think people really appreciate this fact, though most wish there was more than one amp since my waiting list has grown to well over 20 individual destinations! :scared:

As I will be building an amp for reviews in the next run, I'm contemplating using it as a second demo amp, but that won't be available until 1Q next year. My other thought was to keep it here in the shop, so I can actually have an amp of my own that isn't a janky prototype.

As for tubes I have not had any problems, they are still the original 10 tubes that were in the amp when I went to CA for the first time last December. Well, with the exception of the loop preamp tube which I changed after I modded the amp post Lugo amp fest and pre NAMM.

I have one other gentleman interested in NC on the list, plus others in MS, AL, and FL. The amp will be in the SF area for another week, then LA for a while (not sure quite how long yet...), then AZ, CO, and a few places in TX. After all that I will probably ship it back home since it will have literally been played by ~50 different people, traveled thousands of miles, and thus may need some freshening up. :D

To give you a little insight into these demos, the way I typically schedule these stops is based on geographic location, interest level, amount of people that will get to play it (amp fest), whether you will record clips, etc. Basically, for those ready to purchase but just want to try first, they get priority.

After the amount of purchasing interest pouring in from the west coast, I plan to begin ordering parts for another run of amps very soon. This means we're about 6 weeks out from shipping the first amp, with an amp shipping every week from that point until all orders are fulfilled.

For those that are willing to purchase sight unseen, I offer a 7 day return period with a small restocking fee. If you'd like to customize the amp, there are no returns...

I love how it vibrates too! It was thunderous in there, the amp was up quite loud.

I think this is the first time a video of ME playing has been posted to one of these forums. As you can see, I found that I'm a much better engineer and builder than player. Stick to what you're good at, right?

Oh, and FYI, that's an iPhone 4 doing the recording. It's not bad, but tends to mud up the tone a bit and smash everything together. Adjustments that are quite apparent in person don't come through too well in the recordings... I still need to get a better recorder to capture testing sessions.

Oh, and it better leave when it's time, or :gethim:...

Got word that Ted recorded with his death metal band yesterday, and they are doing a ton of demos today. I'll post clips as soon as they're available. :D
