Richie Kotzen Home Studio surprisingly average!

I don't have all the top-shelf gear Richie has, but, my studio is set-up is similarly. I use a 60's era Rogers drum kit. I use a Korg i3, and a Nord Lead 3 to cover my keyboard needs...though, I'd love to get my hands on a B3 + Leslie cabinet. I can play, but I'm nowhere close Richie Kotzen level.

I bought some yamaha HS-5's a while back..not sure if they are that great but they were a budget time at the buy so I figure using reference mixes really allows you to get to know your room and speakers.
HS-5's are great monitors, no need to worry. They're influenced by NS-10's after all!

Richie has a lot of nice gear. His rooms work for what he needs. Not sure what is wrong with his set up?

Not to rain on your parade, but the big deal about NS-10's (and to a lesser extent the HS-5's) is not that they're such a great monitor overall...if you compare that to say a Meyer HD-1 for instance...but their transient response and midrange 'placement'. People mix on them, because they translate quite well to subpar systems. I wouldn't want to have them as my only monitor though, unless you'd do all your sub-eq-ing on a really good set of headphones.

Personally I found the HS-5's quite mid-forward, borderline aggressive sounding and that's coming from someone who owns a set of Focal CMS-65's and has regularly mixed on Genelec 1031A's.
The HS-5's sure are better than the entry level M-Audio and Alesis stuff, but once you get to the point of JBL, KRK, etc. in the $300-500 per pair range, you best test them yourself to see what kind of translation you prefer, because all of these will have shortcomings one way or another and one man's 'clear' may be another man's 'harsh'.
Personally, I'm very curious about competition for my Focals; I hear good things about APS Klasiks and Aeons, as well as the Presonus Sceptres.

if you can find them, old Event 20/20Bas should be no slouches either and can be had at a decent budget.

On topic: his 19" stuff is quite something. Lots of Manley, Focusrite, API...and 2 compressors that I own two of as well: DBX 160X.
But yeah, you'd expect some more room treatment than 2 foam panels near the drums.

What makes you think I didn't? Clearly you are in a way. You said you expected a tuned room, etc. He gets great results as it is. So all that being said, what is the issue? The issue is you expected more and didn't get it from him.

It's not an issue for anyone, it is surprising, refreshing, reassuring for people who think they need all that for results. Would I expect more from a guy who has the money and connections to have everything treated? Yes. Do I care that he doesn't ? No. Do I think it shows that you can get results regardless of treatment? Yes. Let's not turn this into a TGP thread...

You were doing fine until your last sentence which actually did what you were hoping it wouldn't.

True!

Modest would've been some presonus or behringer. His stuff looked top shelf

And the Yamaha HS7 is some of the best monitors I own and they are running besides a pair of Focal Twin BE's and a pair of Neumann KH310's
