Riff/Lick/Chords you always play when you hit the amp on

Just curious =0 as i'm sure we're all guilty of always playing the same lick/riff/chords etc.. when testing an amp or just turning an amp on

I slam an A chord then a G chord every single time, it's pretty much automatic

there's nothing wrong with this of course just wondering what other people might be guilty of? =)

for me it's the first main riff for metallica's "battery". gets the right hand going, gets the blood flowing, and it's an easy thrashy riff that lets me know if i'm "on" or not. if i'm sloppy or my pick arm feels tight and i can't blow though this riff, i might as well do an appropriate warm up exercises.....or go have a drink.

I always start with the opening of Thin Lizzy's Cowboy Song.

When I lean down to switch off the standby, I start a hammer on/pull off thrill on the G string (open and 2nd fret... This continues while I find the appropriate master volume. Once this is accomplished, I strum an open A, open D and open E to check the tuning.

I then decide decide that the tone I am getting is no where near satisfactory, and go on Rig Talk in search of a boutique amp that I can't afford. Ah... It's lovely to have such a big support group on hand :D

Usually a Heavy Black Sabbath Riff.
Into the Void, Sign of the Southern Cross
Turn up the Night, or DIO Stand up and shout.

Shortest straw, Replica, Mountain Song, Caught in a Mosh

I always like playing using the intro to Caught in a Mosh to here how the chords ring out..

Damn That River by AIC - to see if the amp can give me that Cantrell grind, then a few of my own

I play in drop tunings most (90%) of the time so there's some open palm muted chugga chugga for volume and EQ. Then I warm up with a few variations of scales leading to Killswitch Engage tunage until I feel up to speed. At that point it usually goes to the writing grind as I'm in the middle of two albums.

I bet you got kids videoing you all the time when you try out WarLocks at GC!

Oh yes! I always face the wall when breaking that one out though. Can't risk having somebody trying to steal my riffs.

I normally play in Drop D/C#. I hit a big open D to make sure everything is good and then I play "Lay it Down"

I like the way you think. Just be careful no one tabs it out and leaks the bugger!!!

I only know one song....so I just hit a D..add a finger then a stretch (maybe one day I'll learn another chord name too ) :-)

Metallica, good choice sir.

If I'm trying an amp out I usually do some of my own stuff to see how well the amp is able to accent what I'm playing. If I'm just warming up on my own amp then lately it's been some AIC, Opeth, Megadeth and such.

On new amps, for sure...I'll play an old riff of mine to test the feel/response of the amp.

On my own amps, whatever I'm working on, after the obligatory open A, G, D. With a good amp, those just make me smile :D
