UPDATE: I pulled the song, some people were commenting on their solos being slightly late, I'm going to the studio now to work on it. I don't want anyone feeling that they are being shown in a bad light, I will upload when done in a couple of hours. I'll get it guys. Sorry
Dude - don't even give my comments a seconds thought! No big deal... Don't spend any more time on this on my account.

Yeah... mine sounds off somehow too, sounds a bit off time, but I think it may just be the context of what I played to vs. being in the middle of a bunch of other solos. I dunno...

Steve

Yours maybe a hair late, I just listened. Some of the passages are late on your soundclick version too. I shuffled all the solos in in grid mode so it was the exact sample length of the backing track I posted. Maybe there was an issue in your conversion, I can look at it tomorrow and nudge it and re-upload. It was hard to tell because I don't know everyone's pocket. I heard issues on solos but it would be one section and then the pocket would straighten up. Working everyday of my life with a click has kind of warped my perception of what's on time, my ear is so acute. So I wasn't going to make judgement calls on peoples feel and groove. But the solos were all lined up perfectly I can tell you that. If anyone else think there's an issue with placement let me know. Listen to it against the track at your home.

James
It could be that you used the first version that I sent as it was at the wrong bpm. I sent a second version that was correct. I dunno - either way, no big deal and I didn't mean for you to spend any more time on this on my account... It's all in fun and I enjoyed recording mine and being a part of this and I have a version that people can hear that is exactly as I intended... I really appreciate your efforts and didn't mean to complain...

Steve

Wow James! Fixing this is kind of above and beyond how cool it already was for you to do this. I was hoping when you got a chance that you could help me get my tracks to sound as hot as some of the other guys in this jam. I've got killer guitars and amps. I've got a vintage API mic pre but my solo sounds absolutely anemic in this compared to some of the other guys who sent stuff in. Granted, I used a wimpy single coil for most of this, but so did 70strathead who solos right before me and besides him being a wicked player it sounds like he's several db hotter or most likely that I am several db wimpier. I seem to have the quietest recording of most and my gear is too good to deserve to be represented by my lame recording self.

My track was bone dry that I sent in. No compression. Nothing. Even in Sonar when I'm mixing it, I have to put your guide track at -4.5 and boost my lead up to +1.5 to get it to be easily heard. I know you're a pro and I'm a Joe, but I want to record like a better Joe like some of these other guys. Thanks.

No I did upload the right version and the track is lined up perfectly and my delay compensation is spot on. Could just be a sample rate issue in your system that slid it. Mine is running off an Apogee Big Ben which is one of the best clock in the world so I don't think it's my rig. I'm going to listen through the solos that had been mentioned as slightly late and I will nudge them to the best of my ability. Give me a few.

If anyone else can tell me, here's my track with the guide track and me throwing some quick verb and delay on it. It sounds alright in this context but sounds like crap compared to some of these other guys when put right next to them.

Thanks for the listen!

dude you're definitely real low in the mix, honestly i thought i was too from what i had heard only once through...but no biggie. YOU'RE SMOKIN! and honestly i like your tone the best of all tracks. James, thanks for putting this together man, great vocals and hook! now go take care of your wifey.

some great solo's for sure, i need to listen more tomorrow.

I think yours is on, you start out on and swagger a little, I pushed yours a ahead a few milli secs but it sounded better where it was. Yours is also a stereo track that has some phasing and timing issues it's self, I'm not sure what's going on, sounds like a slap delay or doubler. It's hard for me to tell on this. If you guys are working on rigs like m-boxes and garage band the clocking can be pretty inconsistent and will cause the timing issues.

Anyway, I'm gonna listen through and do my best but if people feel there are timing issues I may just pull this and chalk it up as an experience. I don't want people feeling there playing is being shown in a bad light. So many of them are spot on so it may be a just a few. It may be me, operator error or computer. I literally import tracks everyday for work from other studio so I know what I'm doing. I work with a studio in Lancaster and do this at least 3 days every week. Weird.

Ant, brother....... I told you, it's no problem getting you the NAMM badge. You're already in. Oh wait, I get it. You're working on the schmoozin' to pull down some endorsements at the show. You are good. You're in with me for a lifetime supply of Hello Kitty picks for this post already. Those Fender and Marshall reps are going to be putty in your hands. :D

Your track is sick buddy. And sounds monster to me. As a matter of fact mine sounds like how I would feel if I had just been for a long swin in a freezing cold pool and had to go shower in the same locker room that the Lakers were showering in.

You think that's real low in the mix? I just listened here, sounds fine. Against yours which is 14 the level are nearly identical. Now I almost wish I never did this, this is gonna turn into a disaster I can see it.

The timing placement of my track by you is right on James. Whether my timing is any good is up for debate.

No worries,, All the clocks and mp3 conversion and phasing issues etc.. you did great. Leave it as it was and let it go. :) not worth the extra work fixing because its not that bad!!! Let them live with it :D

James, PLEASE do not spend a single second more of your time on any of this because of me. I legitimately want recording advice not some prima donna treatment. And I think what you did already was killer!!!!!! I don't blame my sounding wimpy, tone wise on you. You worked with what I gave you. I think you record killer sounding guitars and are an expert in this area and that's all I'm talking about is where do I need to go or am I recording with too low of a signal or should I use compression or something.

Or better yet, since I'm an hour south of you, can I book some time when your new studio is up and running and have you teach me about recording guitar tracks at home? What blows me away is how hot your guide track is with no clipping and at my normal recording level our tracks are not even comparable.

Man I just don't want someone feeling weird about their solo, that sucks and the opposite of what I wanted. I just went through the whole thing and rebounced. It really probably is all the different formats, I import everyday but every studio I work with is Protools HD with Big Bens etc... Listening to some of the solos it almost sounds like the track is sliding around within itself. Soloed without the backing track the solos sounds slippy. It's weird I'm not use to listening to all these different platforms. This has been a learning experience for me for sure.

Its not a big deal James, i dont have the quality speakers u have ..DON'T spend anymore time on it! because you did a magnificant job on this considering all the different amp frequencies to deal with aligning levels and timing spots. No disaster! its a success

peace

Gazzari's

I don't care who you are, if you had seen how many beautiful women filled those clubs in LA in those days, you would have been ratting your hair up and looking for purple pants too. We ALL looked like that, chicks dug it and there were so many guitarists playing those stages that were just SICK! Charvels, Jose Marshalls, Metaltronix, Performance Guitars, it was awesome.

The young guys laugh about it, but you guys freaking missed it. Sit down at the feet of James and have him tell you some stories about the good old days  :D
