Ralph, would you break that down for me in 50 words or less? My brain just cramped looking at all that text.
The forum owner fucks things up. Old members band together and are mean. Mods band together and are mean. Mods go crazy and mod their sections differently. Mods don't do anything sometimes and anarchy reigns. These things ruin the forum. The end.

Steve

You forgot: newbs get shit on. ;)

Nope. Covered in "Old members band together and are mean."

I think this is the first time in my history with RT that a thread made me have the runs...

I'm serious - WTF just happened to my guts!?!?

i think forums are a lot like the business itself in that they're cyclical.. just like gear. they go up.. they go down.
i haven't been posting much here in the last few months because i've been trying to convert my man cave into a useable home studio space. if i felt like i had to post on a forum because i needed someone else's opinion about what gear i should keep.. and which i should part with.. and how i should lay it out.. i'd never make any progress. it's just one of things you have to do for yourself. ;)

I have been a member since day 1 and loved this place for years but lately it has become slow and boring, im tired of people kissing ass around here and especially towards brad. I think that makes people not wanna come here as much. Grow a set of balls and stop trying to suck brads or some amp dealers dicks.

Things have changed alot and i dont post nearly as much as i used to and its rare when i start a thread anymore, I also get tired of the stuck up attitude around here. Theres still some great people around here but theres plenty that arent.

This is also a annoying subject-
If its not a modded marshall then it sucks, you must be a new guy around here with little gear knowledge if you arent playing a friedman, fortin, or holy grail cameron.

Another thing that bugs me is everyday somebody mentions hcaf and how much more intelligent and mature you are, its old now and you guys need to stop comparing yourselves to hcaf and tgp.
So what if people like to be silly and joke with their friends, its just being relaxed and having fun.
They talk gear and theres plenty of great players over there that know as much or more about gear than you guys do, its lame to post everday that your so much more mature than those hcaf idiots. You sound like a bunch of old people that have no sense of humor and are uptight.

Rt is never gonna be the way it used to be, it has evolved now that brad owns it, but i know that he bought it and is making it the way he wants it.

Lots of sub forums on amp builders and advertising makes it seem like a shopping mall now.
The excitement is gone and its slower now, the old rig talk is dead and if we dont like what it has become then we should just adapt or leave.

Your post and attitude are exactly what I referred to in my original post. You seem to have a lot of anger about RT, perhaps you should take your own advice and move on.

Zao is cool he's a long timer just voicing an opinion, it sounds like you only want people around that agree with your views. That is what makes forums lame imo.

It's the passion of opposing opinions that make forums interesting to read at least for me along with killer clips and then last the sales/hype dribble and gear photo shoots.

You misread my post. I enjoy and learn from other opinions like you, its the throwing in the crap attitude that gets old quick. If taking shots at people is expressing opinions...

I think for some folks it's like the cozy neighborhood bar that used to have the booths just right and a killer jukebox changed the floorplan and got a DJ

It does seem that any threads that don't eventually drift towards talk of an 80's icon do die pretty quick and the ass kissing is sometimes comical but it's still all good to me. If anything I'm tired of "Heavy Clip" being another go at Rose of Sharyn or 7 string madness. Love Ola's vids but would also love some 6 string heaviness that isn't melodic euro death. I guess in the spirit of this discussion I'll have to post some. :D

Old enough that it is quite possible I fathered a large portion of the members over at Harmony Central which may explain their violent hatred for the whole "hair metal/cock rock" scene they rage about about. They are probably still mad at their moms for attending all those shows back on the Sunset Strip.

A gentleman never tells his age, but I have a '66 strat that is from the year of my birth. :D

Whoa :D you're older than I am in that case. A thing I find quite surprising these days. For example the place I work at, I'm in the oldest 10% by far...

And as a gentleman never tells his age all I can say is that I think you guys over there across the pond had a small encounter in politics with mr. Nixon involving a certain hotel in the year I was born ;)

Well, while I'm at it in this thread I may as well give an opinion of a relative n00b on a few things discussed here:

I've been a member for what, a year and a half, and only recently started (found the courage) to post replys and / or start my own threads. Courage meaning only the fact that I kinda did not (and still don't) feel worthy of posting, there's such a vast wealth of knowledge and experience shown here. I hope you understand what I'm aiming at.

I've felt and still do feel that there's a strong camradarie here, one gets help / answers to their posts / questions quite fast and on the nose as well. Great people, amazing knowledge!

The advertising or manufacturer forums, they don't bother me one bit. I feel it's a natural part of this forum, as it would be on any other forum. May be it's because it's always been like that when I've been here, I don't know.

I honestly don't get what the ass-kissing bits mean. I myself call things as I see / hear them, and reply to threads that way as well. I'm an easy-going guy who likes music (well to be honest I am an eighties buttrock whatever guy haha!) in all shapes and sizes. A good song is a good song is a good song, great tone to my ear is great tone to my ear. My replys may come off as buttlicking or whatnot, but hey if I like the clip or guitar or playing I tell it to ya :D .

Which brings me to posting clips. Man there are some AWESOME players here  . Great tones, great technique, great taste. And FWIW in so many different styles as well, I'm not talking only about the guys who play "Lay It Down" or the like ;) . I'd love to post a clip or two myself (to put my money where my mouth is really) if I had the chance to record some but at the moment there isn't one. The only clips I'd have to share are my band's live clips if any.

And this brings me to the jams some (many really) of you seem to be missing. They were cool to listen to and if I had any possibility to participate I'd be all over a global jam as well. Guitar Rig 3 on and let's go (that's the only means to record for me, or better yet was, now that my puter died and I'm on this crappy minilaptop even that won't work  ).

Oh well, that's a long story compressed to a short and messy rant. I guess what I'm trying to say that I'm only starting to find my way around this forum and so far I've loved it here!

You people rock!

Chubtone":2qjo7mkr said:
I agree with the large majority of your rant Vlad. You are one of the guys that made/make Rig Talk a valuable forum. You are a voice of reason. You are a guy that knows where the line is between reality and bullshit.

You own (or owned) a Bogner Ecstasy Classic at the same time you owned a Splawn Quick Rod and a vintage Marshall Super Lead. I feel like years ago on here, we would have asked you to post a clip of all three amps and then just picked which we liked better by the sound you were able to achieve.

Nowadays I don't think many on the forum would even need to listen to the clip to decide. The Bogner costs 2.5x as much. It must sound better, period. It must make you a better player too.

And again, the thing that gets me too is that you post a clip using the $200 Peavey Revalver software that had a better, more pure guitar tone than ANY of the Axe FX clips I have ever heard, yet the Peavey Revalver software languishes on music store shelves and the Axe FX has a line that still goes around the block. I think you and I have a similar approach. I'm not stealing money out of my wife's purse to buy gear and it's easier for me to sneak out $200 than $2500. I'll take that same $2500, I'm just going to buy Revalver and a killer mic pre and some mics and some recording software and EZ Drummer and expansion packs. While others are getting an Axe FX and staring at it and saying "well I would make a clip, but I have no way to record"......

It sure was fun back then Curt...
Folks would post all kinds of blind-shoot outs... speakers/tubes/amps/pickups/pedals and there was no agenda. I remember this one pickup shoot out someone did (may have been you actually) where they got a hold of a Tom Holmes, an SD59 and some other $$ pickup. I listened to it and liked the SD '59 over the Holmes and the other pricey pickup. Like you said, you don't seem to get that anymore. Folks rely on the price factor to make their decisions... Or maybe we're just remembering the past with rose colored glasses... I dunno.

The way I see it, there are people who are into guitar playing i.e. music... and there are people who are into the objects associated with guitars because they are indeed quite sexy. I'm not trying to say that gear isn't fun but I feel like the primary focus back then was guitar playing and gear was just a means to an end. In this current incarnation of the forum I'd pop into threads and offer up a "Instead of this $$$$ try this, because in the end it's not going to matter" and get summarily ignored so I stopped doing it. Hey if you want to go into hock for a hobby, go right ahead but it won't make you better. If anything it will distract you from the real goal and that's playing guitar. Also, people seem to readily discount the "tone is in the fingers/hands/player" argument around here more than ever. Which is sad because there's so much evidence to support it both from amateurs and pros alike. Invariably there's some smart-ass that jumps in and says "Oh yeah? I'd like to see you play Slayer thru a Fender Bassman" well that's not what is meant by that "tone is in the fingers argument"... LOL! :D

Couple all this with life/family/work etc... and after a certain point, you quit posting and either leave or just lurk... So not sure what any of us "old timers" can do. :dunno:

This is a real question: What is stopping any of the "old regulars" from posting blind tone shootouts and clips of whatever gear they like? Seems like your pining for the old days when you used to do it but nobody is stopping anybody from posting that they love their "Fill in the blank" amp they got for $300 bucks. I would certinley welcome it.

Never said anyone is stopping anyone... What I'm saying is the general atmosphere of the forum is different. I don't have an answer as to why, only my perception. You can agree or disagree with it, but it's just that... my perception...

But no. No I never said someone is stopping/banning/deleting anything that is contrary to the 'cool stuff'...

4. The responses to posts are predictable and absurd... Thread subject: "Looking for a bridge pickup". The immediate response is BKP, MCP or something else that's the cool thing right now (and costs $$$). Same thing occurs with amps/cabs/speakers. How many times can one hear "Cameron, Fortin, Friedman, Diezel, Scumback, Suhr, etc..."? Ok I get it, folks love them... whatever. It's all over-hyped as far as I'm concerned and maybe it's me, I've been around this shit too long and it's all the same where as others are at a point where they're discovering new stuff.

See, you're thinking with your brain now; stop, think with $$$ signs. Predictably, the more the better.

Q: Should I go with the SD Custom or Custom Custom?
A: Oh, well, that's easy, BKP Ceramic Nailbomb or Awayfu....

Q: But wait, that's not even what I was asking...
A: And furthermore, replace your guitar with a Luxxtone. A Diezel will also be a better amp for your blues gigs.

5. Not enough people posting clips or videos. Without playing, this place is basically nothing more than a store-front. Also, pardon me if I don't take people who don't demonstrate some ability. If I'm supposed to take your opinion seriously, you better kick-ass at guitar. Sorry... I'm not trying to be a dick it's just hard to separate the real-deal from the bullshit. Playing helps me do that.

And now, you're telling me that you won't listen to me. Frankly Vlad, that hurts my feelings. :D

its funny. since finding this site a few years ago....when i google a piece of gear now, i automatically have it look like this:

"XXXXX XXXXXX XXXXXX pedal" -harmony -central

works wonders.
