Drummer Witold "Vitek" Kieltyka of the Polish extreme metal band DECAPITATED passed away in a Russian hospital from injuries sustained in a recent road collision. He was 23 years old.

Vitek and DECAPITATED singer Covan (real name: Adrian Kowanek) were hurt in an accident earlier in the week involving DECAPITATED's tour bus and a truck carrying wood in Gomel, on the Russia/Belarus border. Both musicians reportedly sustained serious head injuries in the collision, which is believed to have been the fault of the band's driver (although this has not yet been officially confirmed).

According to the Polish Internet portal Onet.pl, Vitek underwent trepanation, a form of surgery in which a hole is drilled or scraped into the skull, and was due to be transported to a hospital in Krakow, Poland for further treatment.

Covan's family released a statement yesterday (Thursday, November 1) that the vocalist's condition had improved. At the time, the vocalist was still said to be at a hospital in Novozybkov, Russia, where he and Vitek were taken following the accident.

ok gents, I'm not aiming to be disrespectful, I'm just sort of musing here, but is it proper to mourn someone in an extreme metal band? I mean, would they just enjoy passing on themselves? And its sort of ironic in a bad way that a member of the band decapitated would suffer a head injury.

wow, that's awful.....I heard he was a monster drummer.

I'm still in shock about this...I'm a big Decapitated fan. He was a sick drummer as well. Such an awful way to go. Covan was a cool cat too, I spoke to him at their NJ show. I hope he recovers well.

R.I.P. Vitek,

-Joe

So he was "Decapitated" ???

There was a Deadhead who got killed in Portland after leaving a Dead show, chose to run accross the I-5 Freeway....he was hit by a VW Bus....

I'm not that familiar with the band but that's a shame. So young...

My favorit band. Im really bummed about this. brings a tear to my eye.

Total tragedy. What a great drummer and one of the absolute best DM bands out there.

I think you're a little confused. Extreme metal's lyrical basis isn't just about killing people, gore and death, many bands have lyrics that go beyond that. Of the bands that have the lyrics involving death / gore... these lyrics are often more of a commentary or from a story telling standpoint. Would we mourn Thomas Harris (writer of the Silence Of The Lambs series, creator of the character Hannibal Lector) passing if he was murdered by a serial killer? Would we feel bad if Stephen King was kidnapped, held hostage, and tortured by a deranged fan (like in his "Misery" story)? Sure, if any of these instances occurred, it'd be ironic, but they wouldn't want these things to happen.
