Customer: Yes, I'd like a road worn Tele.

GC expert service rep: Well, I've got this old beat up used one I can let you have for $350. You'll have to spend a couple of hun getting it set up and fixing the wiring, but you'll have a decent road worn git.

Customer: No, you don't understand. I want a NEW road worn Tele, never played by anyone. And it has to cost $5000.

That's got to be the most unusual type of guitar ever built. I can't imagine the market for such a guitar. I trust we are all in 100% agreement that they are an absolute waste of money.

Back in the day when the relic Strats debuted all of us guys who had Vintage shops laughed for a minute and then loved them because the more morons who came in and banged it into the wall the better. No more shop worn discount, true story there.

I think they were created in direct response to Stratmania in the late 1980's when Vintage strats passed the $5K mark and became unaffordable to most ham and egg musicians. Fender said we can make a banged up look alike for $2K with a Custom Shop logo and certificate and clean up and they were right.

I must say Axemeaquestion you are a prolific thread starter as of late. ;)

Dude... I see you're on fire with this forum as of late. I guess thumbs up if ya gots nothing better to do. I'm not passing judgement, I'm here just the same.

To your comment - I am 100% behooved at this current trend of 'road worn' and 'relic' and 'VOS' bullshit. I can't stand it, and I would NEVER buy something that was already 'cosmetically stressed' in the hopes that it felt 'more played in' and offered 'more mojo' (exactly WHAT does that mean, anyway?!?!?!). What a steaming heap of horseshit. Like, seriously people!! Is that how pathetic the buying public has become?? We succumb to this marketing machine's notion that by 'going through a special, select process at the manufacturers' plant, that 100% effectively duplicates the look and feel of a vintage and/or worn masterpiece' we'll be in better standing to shred/cut heads?

I'm at a loss for any further words on this particular matter. It's been something that's been bugging me since Day No.1 when I first saw the trend...and it continues to irk me no end.

Whatever,
V.

PS - I can see it now, "Heritage Tour Tattered Axe FX Model" replete with sticky beer stains, dents, pre-arranged cigarette ashes inside the chassis and nicotine scent; inoperable LED's - additional upcharge only $299.00 LIMITED TIME OFFER.

I'd have to agree a $5000 road worn tele is a waste of money especially when you can pick up a Fender Road Worn series for $799 brand new (Sam Ash in Atlanta). The Road Worn series is IMO the best production guitar value out there if you like that sort of thing. They sound and play great

some of your favorite guitar players, play custom relic guitars, billy gibbons comes to mind

+10000 THANK YOU... i mean if I take zero care of the body of my guitar ,thrash the s out of it itS worth crap.... if fender or gibson ,etc do it ,its now worth twice as much,,.. ding dong people ,

Yeah id have to agree, i'd rather beat the shit out of my guitar, than let somebody do it for my and then charge me an arm and a leg for it.

I have a road worn Oldsmobile. It has a NOS Audiovox AM/FM/Cassete. I will include the genuine vintage Jensen traixial speakers. Custom installation job on the rear window deck. I believe that was the Manuel mod.

Man, you don't like anything do you? Well, except maybe Holdsworth

Au contraire, mon frere.

By stating what I don't like, it's like making a sculpture.

What remains, the sculpture, is what I like.

I'm an artist, bro.

  Oh, I get it. I guess some people just like to complain about what they don't like other than just making threads about what they do like.

I'm going to take your criticism to heart, brother. You'll take note of a new thread I'll be starting momentarily.

I was playing Beat up guitars ..........

before they were "cool" and called relics...

And I was SNUBBED when I played them.....
Now who is laughing!! :D

I think the relics look cool, but no, I'd never spend that kind of money on one. One thing about a lot of new guitars, though, is the poly finishes. They definitely don't seem to age in the (battered but cool) way the old nitro finishes did.
