Good point. The 50's through the mid 60's was not a hot bed of well crafted music, although the bands had to be able to play and sing. It wasn't until the late 60's that rock musicians started writing pieces of music with complexity and parts. It peaked in the mid to late 70's and died with Nirvana. Perhaps the craft of song writing will return, it just may not be in the rock genre.
If anything, the 90s were a return to good songwriting. If you're looking for rock epics, November Rain and The Unforgiven come to mind. If you're looking for complex, Smashing Pumpkins and Dream Theater.
Alice in Chains, Pantera, Guns 'n Roses, Janes Addiction, Tool, Red Hot Chilli Peppers, Soundgarden, Nine Inch Nails, Body Count, Blind Mellon, Metallica, Megadeth, Slayer, Rollins Band, The Cranberries, Primus, Stone Temple Pilots, Porno for Pyros, Violent Femmes, Foo Fighters, Green Day, My Bloody Valentine, Depeche Mode, Ministry, White Zombie, Weezer, Pearl Jam, Rage Against the Machine, The Cure, Kyuss, Queens of the Stoneage, Hole, Butthole Surfers, Rainbow Butt Monkeys...
... and Nirvana.
... and Aerosmith, Blink 182, No Doubt, Oasis, Radiohead, Beck, Offspring, Tom Petty, Korn, Garbage, Faith No More, Counting Crows, The Presidents of the United States of America, Sonic Youth, Lenny Kravitz, Incubus, The Black Crows, Jewel, Modest Mouse, Rancid, Dinosaur Jr, Everclear, even Neil Young was still kickin' it.
What do we have now?
