The Rockstah mod 5 is really a one trick pony VH mod which was Marks goal. I installed one according to those schematics and it was Blah sounding quite honestly. I made some changes and got it sounding pretty good as long as you have the chops but it was kind of uninspiring to play it just didn't have that plexi about to explode qualities to it.

I would have to say the best plexi style mod out there IMO is the Michael RT/mod which still retains plexi feel and tone with alot of gain... more gain than the Mod 5. I have done a mod similar to the RT/mod to my 72SL and I like it alot better than the mod 5.

I think the Bray is also a good proven great sounding high gain plexi mod if modded plexi tones is your goal.
Here is some clips of my mod 5 in a 50 watt plexi amp which I eventually went with a Cameron inspired JCM800 for that amp but it was no longer plexish IMO. These clips were straight into the amp GB speakers 12K SD pickup fairly low/medium volume.

I sent my Marshall in to get that mod got the amp back but not the money I pre-paid for the mod ..I felt bad for his fiancé she said he had called her after the gig and said I think I'm having a heart attack was his last words she said her whole world changed in seconds...

Sounds good but I hear what you mean.. it is almost held back from being that exploding plexi on 10. You can see where you really have to work to bring out the best in that mod. Might as well just nudge it with an EQ. The michael R/T mod does sound like it has the mojo from most of his clips here and what is more, a lot of his clients are also very statisfied when they get the amps and play it with their own hands....

I'm not taking away from Marks work, he contributed alot to Metro, I was on Metro with Rockstah, Rgaplin and BMF5150 during the fun days of Metro it was a great time. The Mod 5 is a great mod to get more gain and close to a modded plexi tone but I think it lacks some of the openness and the clank that a cranked 2 gain stage plexi has because it is 3 gain stages(like a JCM800), but if you add the correct reverb echo and can play the chops the Mod 5 can nail the tone. I have my 68 Metro plexi that has most of the DF specs in it with other tweaks that is my baseline. I find the RT mod retains the open not as compressed raw plexiness yet has quite alot of gain but also has more of a ready to explode ie:feel/feedback to it, I find it more fun to play, it's just better. Here is Dario Van Halen, (this guy has all the chops) with an RT mod Marshall SL you guys can A/B the RT mod doing VH verus the tone of the my Mod 5 doing VH and decide for yourselves. IMO the RT mod more closely replicates the feel and tone of my cranked 68 plexi that I have to load down, variac down to 90 Volts and all the rest, it's a pain in the ass... sounds great, just not practical.

man...i've watched Dario's clips time and again...and never did i notice he's using the R/T mod! Reading is not important i guess...

That cat can flat out play..and his rig sounds killer. Well done M R/T!

That's me playing in some of the amp vids but that's my brother's band and channel, he's a drummer but he also dabbles in guitar, I built him a Cameron inspired 2203/4 stage Aldrich amp cause that was the tone he liked. He also owned a Cameron Ocean for a while. That 50 watt plexi that had the mod 5 became a HGJose amp that has three selectable gain levels, I wish I had gotten more clips of it.

He had EVH’s swing down to a T
He was a good dude, one of my old bands opened for Starship back in the early 2000s and as I was setting up my rig he offered to let me play though his cab...pretty cool of him. After we finished I watched him doing some warmups backstage, he was playing stuff similar to YJM. I'm sure the guy could play whatever he wanted.
RIP.

Did Mark play for Starship? As in Jefferson Airplane?

His clips sound so good...
I noticed one of the amps was for Dario...wonder if that Is the same Dario linked above in this thread. And if it's the same amp that M R/T modded.

MA sounded like he was good people...hate I wasn't around on the forums back then.

Yes sir. They played Rock Fest in Cadott Wi in either 01 or 02, can't remember which year and I think the only original member was Mickey Thomas, and he was a late addition in the 70s. But, however old he was his vocals still ripped when they played Jane. I believe Mark passed after a show with them, that was his main gig.
Wish I had gotten into the tone chase back then, his Marshall stack sounded killer.

Nice guy. Knew his gear. Never once name dropped who he was playing with.
I remember other guys trying to question his mods like a pissing contest.
He never fed Into it. I used to talk with him quite a bit in pm conversation.
I had no idea he played for starship. We just talked gear etc.
was floored when I heard of his passing. Dude looked like the epitome of health.
Guy was rock n roll. Hands down.

Oh, that's an awesome gig he had! I do remember him on the boards, very active, very skilled, very kind. Bummer.
I wonder if his clips are still floating out there

The epitome of health is an understatement...dude was ripped. Back in 02 I was probably in my best shape physically, other than my military years, and our bass player was a competitive power lifter. As Mark came over to us, we both thought when he wasn't playing he must be a gym rat. No way anyone could have told us within 10 yrs he would pass due to a heart attack. Must have been in his family history. He was down to earth and very cool, unlike some other dudes in this business.

The biggest problem with the Mike RT mod is Michael himself. The guy is a total douchbag and isn’t worthy of anyone’s money. Again, like the Rockstah mod, Mike RT makes his mod sound awesome and I doubt it sounds that good live.

What is that statement based on? Seems like a pretty cool guy and shared his tweaks many times with people on the forum.

Michael has always been super cool to all from what I seen.
Not up on the Marshall mods.
But his sound great as well.
