Ronnie James Dio... what's the big deal?

Dio hasnt really ever put out anything horrible...hes ALWAYS on with his voice, and after all this time his voice is still as good as it was back in the day. you cant really say that about any other vocalists (except Bruce or Rob...while they have aged they can both still bring it, especially The Bruce!)

i mean...look at Maiden now. theyre still up there having a great time and kicking ass, with Bruce jumping around and running around as much as always. Priest still puts on great shows as well, and Dio is still kickin' ass and takin' names. many bands these days wont be able to say that 20 years from now. many of the extreme vocalists will have lost their voices by then methinks. just look at James Hetfield...

Unfortunately there's a reason why Hetfield lost his voice.

Small man with a HUGE voice. I think his voice carved a template for THE vocal "sound" of many 80's bands...

Granted, I only have a surface knowledge of Dio songs. But why is this guy always mentioned as one of the greats? Point me to something that has him shine.

Listen to anything Dio sings on - that's him shining. If you don't "get it" listening to him in a few songs then you probably never will like Dio. I think he's one of the best and strongest metal singers of all time, definitely in the top 3.

RONNIE JAMES DIO... WHAT'S THE BIG DEAL??!??

I get it!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

If anything, DIO helped maintain the importance of top notch guitarists in rock music. examples:

Vivian Campbell (Gary Moore wanna-be)
Ritchie Blackmore (the smoke on the water guy)
Craig Goldy (yes...a good guitarist)
Rowan Robertson (flashy but never hit it off)
Doug Aldrich (some guy with fairly good tone and chops)
Tony Iommi (some guy from england)

Seriously, RJD is one of the best leaders for organizing and putting together some classic rock line-ups and albums. I was never a huge fan until I saw him a few years ago. His intensity and dedication to giving a great performance was killer.

Dio writes for the hard rock/metal "hook". He's smart enuff to know the importance of having a hot shot guitar player in his fold, he's got great imagery in his lyrics ( if you dig that style ) and he was doing that type of thing LOOOOONNNNNNGGGG ago, and the guys been in music since, like, the 50's!!!!!!  Makes him Important in the history of Metal, especially if you were a child of the 80's..... We Rock, Holy Diver, Last in Line, all real important tunes to me personally growing up. The guys a legend, and I'll KILL you if you fk with him again!!!!      Actually, his 7 foot tall, 330 pound Bodyguard will kill you if you fk with him!!!!      You gotta be in the mood an have the cans on, and like all music, you'll get it at the right place/right time if you Listen. Like lookin at a 3D Picture.....

Listen to:
Rainbow Rising
Black Sabbath- Children of the Sea
Heaven and Hell
Lonely is the Word
The Sign of the Southern Cross
Voodoo
Country Girl
Too Late
Buried Alive
DIO- Holy Diver
Don't Talk to Strangers
Invisible
We Rock
Last in Line
All The Fools Sailed Away
Sunset Superman
I say he has the single Greatest

Yep, he had the best voice evaaaah for that kind of a heavy hardrock back in the late 80s. But you knew that already, didn't you?

I feel it is important to find DIO by yourself. HE IS THE BEST at what he does, and is passionate in every musical note.

A great starting point is HEAVEN AND HELL or MOB RULES by Sabbath. If you aren't swayed after hearing those, then there is no point.
I agree here. Also Holy Diver and The last In Line are classic. Very powerful strong vocals, his lyrics are cool. Listen to the words in Heaven and Hell. On a negative note I really don't care for anything he has done with Craig Goldie.

Yeaaahhhgggg....great voiceaaaahhhgggg.

He went from angry teenager voice to caveman voice. Great riff writer, great band up through the Justice album, but his vocals were never good IMO.

Sure his vocals aren't technical but damn his voice was so damn heavy and yet clear sounding in late 80s. It fits Metallica's kind of music perfectly, IMO. Loud, aggressive, clear, heavy, gritty etc.

I dig James' vocals very much as well. His early stuff that is.

The thing that impresses me the most about him is that he sounds just like the album when singing live. His voice also sounds very "powerful" to me.

+1

SO fucking consistent. I love him on the Rainbow live DVD. He sounds amazing, and he can still pull it off now. Great frontman too.
