I have a question on how to set this up…I have a single channel Marshall w/fx loop that is going to be my main dirty sound. I also have an Axe-Fx that I want to use for both my clean tones (and other additional preamp tones) and fx for the Marshall.

I’ve tried the 4-cable method, but I just get too much noise with the line level signal running into the front my amp. Plus, I have a couple of pedals that I want to put in front of my amp and a couple in the loop of my amp so I figure having this stuff in something like the Rocktron Patchmate Loop 8 would be the way to go.

It seems like a pretty basic setup from the other stuff I’ve seen, but I just can’t wrap my head around how to incorporate the Axe-Fx with the looper. Also, I have a Suhr Mini-Mix. I don’t know if it has a use in this set up, but I figured I’d mention it.

Anyway, some pointing in the right direction would be greatly appreaciated.

well you put the marshall preamp of the amp in a loop and then you put the axe fx front end [like you were using the 4 cable methed] then if you have any pedals for post put them in the next loops. Take the out of that chain and feed the other section of the axe and out to the power amp rtn. Hope that helps

Dave,

Thanks for the input. It's greatly appreciated. I think I follow what you're saying. I did a little sketch with the GCX Worksheet to make sure I followed you, but I don't see how I'd get the Axe-Fx preamp tones. Am I missing something?

FIgures   . Email coming your way man.

Frank, did you ever get this sorted out? I'd love to see your routing. I'm using an Axe Fx with an Egnater M4. I want to use the Axe for effects w/ the M4 and for amp sims as well. Mine will be w/d/w though.

Yeah, it got sorted. I read Dave's thread with the Pete Thorn rig and it finally clicked for me. Anyway, here it's is. It was just a quick mock up to make sure a had the concept and the correct placing of the Axe and amp pre.

Thanks man. Just so I'm clear, Loop 1 of the GCX is hitting Input 1 and Output 1 of the Axe (I assume the Left side of each) and Loop 4 of the GCX hits Input 2 and Output 2 of the Axe (again, the left side of each)?

Is that correct?

I haven't really got to test it out yet. I ran into programming issues since this midi looper stuff is new to me and I haven't had time to mess with it since, but yeah that is the way I'm going to set it up initially. If I run into problems I'll match up Loop 1 with Input 1 and Output 2 and Loop 4 with Input 2 and Output 1 and try it that way since that's how the 4 cable method is described in the Axe Fx manual.

Now I'm confused. The Axe manual shows a preamp in the Axe's loop using Input2 and Output2. The guitar goes into Input1 (front or back) and the Out1 L and R feed the stereo amp.

In any case, my head is spinning from all the options. I just don't know which method to settle on.

You're right when you're using just a preamp. The method I'm using is more akin to the 4 cable method.

I'm a dope. I forgot you're using a head. Then it makes sense that you could do it that way. Same as the Pete Thorn rig. I think the Axe presets will have to be done differently in that case. Your wet will go out the Axes Effect Send and dry out the main Output 1. With a preamp and the 4CM it's the reverse.

Good luck and post back. I'd love to know how it works out.

I've decided to not put the Axe or M4 in a GCX loop at all. I'm going to use the 4CM and then use the Axe's Return and Send blocks to feed a copy of the signal back to the FX loop and out the Out2 R to the dry amp/cab. It's just way simpler for me that way. I'll just use the GCX loops for pedals I want before or after the Axe/M4.
