Satriani - An amazing guitarist but I still don't dig it

Always have been most likely always will be a fanboy. I don't sound like any guitarist but he has influenced me more than anyone. I think I would like Chickenfoot much more if they had a new singer. I don't like Sammy's lyrics and his vocal style really grates on my ears these days. I loved him back in the day but not so much anymore.

Except for Gary Moore and Yngwie in the early 80's I can't think of one "virtuoso/shredder" post VH that I liked their tone or material. Satch with surfing grabbed my attention, but I was 17 and it was a lot more accessible than a lot of the Shrapnel stuff that was just bad metal to me. I don't hear any guitar playing in Chickenfoot that's all that interesting and his tone has always been too soft for me. Especially in the context of a good time rock band like CF. Seems like a very nice dude but would rather listen to Montrose or solo Sammy than the CF stuff.

this +100!
Love the UNBOXED CD from Hagar. ;)

Satch was a huge influence on my early drive to progress in guitar. He was the first virtuoso I learned to appreciate, and his JS1000 signature Ibanez was my first high(er)-end guitar. I always felt that while he was less flashy than Vai, Yngwie, etc., he was much better songwriter when it comes to the 'rock' side of things.

I love Satriani. Always have. Probably always will. Plays with balls, fire and aggression that I don't hear from most shredders. Makes a big difference to me.

+1 on Radiohead

I'll take listening to Radiohead over Satriani every day. If you can't understand why Radiohead is great, that's probably because they have nothing to do with guitar virtuosity and everything to do with great songwriting and vision. To each their own.

and youre welcomed to it Colin but you cant assume that someone not liking Radiohead has anything to do their lack of guitar virtuosity. I think that their songwriting blows and their vision is blurred at best. Pure genius my ass LOL!!!! But hey If you like em, right on. Im into a whole other world of non guitar music and love well written tunes. Im not a Dave Matthews fan by any stretch but respect him and his songwriting talents. I get why it appeals to people, radiohead not at all...

Satch has amazing proficiency, total command of theory and is a gifted melody composer. Nobody can argue this and be taken seriously.

Having said that, it does not mean that you have to be moved by him. Nothing wrong with that at all. We are complicated creatures.

His body of work as an instrumental guitarist cannot be questioned though. From delicate tunes to fast shreddy stuff, he always has great memorable melodies and riffs. His compositional melodic brilliance is what makes him stand out from all the guys with just chops

Well said.

Yep, It's all a matter of taste. There are very few guitarist I don't get...but I do get Satriani.

I don't get Guthrie Govan or Yngwie Malmsteen. Yeah, I know, great players...just not into them.

I also don't like strawberry ice cream.

I think Satch's compositions are very basic and standard rock stuff myself. Vai's music is much more complex in my opinion. But I get tired of his music too. Just like I get tired of Steve Morse as well. I think I would rather hear Satch playing over top some jazzier chord changes a la Jeff Beck. I think that would be neat and a nice change of pace. I did not like the first Chickenfoot album and thought his playing was anemic on it. But I think the new single and look forward to hearing the rest....

I think it's largely a generational thing why you don't "get" Radiohead. Lots of jazz guys do however, like Brad Mehldau for example.

And fwiw I was just agreeing with Reza, I wasn't trying to go after you or w/e. Though I realize in hindsight it quoted your post too since he did.

Dug Satch until right ofter the self titled disc. As a whole, I have been less and less into guitar albums in recent years. Although I love me some Andy Timmons. IMHO, Raidohead blows. I can't stand them. You hear great song writing... I here noise. To each their own. When I want to hear brilliant song writing, I'll put in some Big Wreck or anything else involving Ian Thornley. Actually these days, when I want to hear a well crafted song, I listen to country music.

Where's the facepalm thingy when you need it.

Modern country music is the definition of inbred songwriting pools and musicians. Absolutely horrible by any stretch of the imagination. It's right on par with contemporary christian music. Everything I hate about music is summed up in both of those genre's.

But it's cool. We all like what we like. :bash:

And Radiohead.........

I run hot and cold on Satch but I respect his talent and song craft. I've tried hard to find something redeemable about Radiohead's music because some folks whose opinions I value think that they're brilliant, but ultimately it comes off as pretentious, self absorbed garbage to me...to each their own.

I watched/listened to the Radiohead clip and was completely underwhelmed...oh well, back to the garage to annoy the neighbors

And he sounds like Joe.

You know it was almost impossible to watch that vid with the boobies bouncing next to it the whole time!
