Saw Yngwie and Ethan Brosh last nite

Great review, Yngwie is one of my fav's, dont understand all the hate and jealousy?

I think of Yngwie as kind of all of the above, mega-talented, the guy who took rock technique to a scary new level, totally gives everything at his shows, has often come off as a prick, to some his playing gets repetitive, and being the character that he is, of course his weight at times is going to invite some humor (I don't see the problem with that unless someone's just being outright mean-spirited).

Rather than overly try to defend or criticize him, I'd rather just take him for what he is, good and bad. He's never really been a favorite player of mine, but when I finally saw him at G3 I had a whole new level of respect for how much he gives as a performer. Glad to see he's still rocking hard at 50.

I've mixed feelings on Yngwie; Love his playing, but hate his music.

Not that it means anything... I saw Yngwie last night in Boston.

It looks like he's heard all your fat & doughnut jokes..

He's lost a considerable amount of weight.

He looks like he did in his Marching Out Live in Japan DVD that came out in '85.

When I posted this review, I knew that it's going to be both haters and people who do respect his contribution to guitar, I can respect both. Yngwie does provoke that kind of reaction.
But I have to say, some great intelligent observations from you guys here.

Please don't count me as a hater. Just because I was critical of some things, I listen to (in small doses) and collect concerts on the guy. Have for decades. I actually liked him best in Alcatrazz. i thought the lineup w/ Joe Lynn Turner could have been the next Rainbow. Plus I owned numerous Yngwie Strats and currently own a YJM!

A couple of rare ones-

I think the reason he's so bright is because he's played loud for a long time and loss some high end in his hearing, it's inevitable. Old Marshalls don't have to be overly bright. Happens to lots of older players' tone.

I totally understand where you're coming from, bro. And i wasn't directing to you as hater. I myself do have a love hate thing with Yngwie as a player. When I saw him with G3, it was a little uncomfortable, he didn't play that good, but still great performance, although his weight at the time made some of his stage moves look more comical than cool.
But it's a different yngwie when I saw him last Fri. He is in shape, played better and his ideas were really much more cohesive. The guy is hard on his tech though, very demanding, but then again, it shows that he really does care about giving his audience 100%.
I enjoy his playing, but like you, only in small doses. He constantly repeats himself over the years. but as someone eloquently described, it is his own unique style.
BTW how do you like your YJM? Love to get a little review. My main guitar at the moment is a cream color 1973 Strat, scalloped, very close to Yngwie's original Duck guitar, with a few mods of my own. i've been thinking of getting a YJM because I don't want to bring out the 73 all the time to gigs.

My personal opinion is the guy, though insanely talented never really moved on. It's the same 80's metal horseshit, clothes and stage moves. 50 years old for Christ sake. Reminds me of the fat Elvis era.

You just described at least 50% of Rig-Talk!

The YJM is great. I got it over a year now. The built-in booster works great and is convenient, although a bit bright. The only way to tame that, IMO is to jump the channels.

I been using a reissue MXR Distortion+. Any decent OD can be used and most are more toneful than the DOD 250 or whatever is that's built in the head. I think they built the shitty DOD YJM 308 in it

+1 on the YJM Marshall. That's the best Marshall for a long time.

I would guess that Yngwie's ego comes from the fact that less skilled players and critics often criticized his playing and style and he's just quick to say "F' off" with his immediately visible and apparent ego. I went through my yngwie phase many years ago and often got comments that all I do is play fast by guys who couldn't keep up. The ego is for the guys who immediately dismiss him because of their jealousy.

As far as the weight, clothing and over the hill comments.... I'd say log onto www.sissy-talk.com. If you're a guy and a guitarist (no offense to any women on this board but there's a reasonable probability that you might more concerned about those things about a man in general for obvious reasons) why do you care? Has nothing to do with his music, tone or playing.

The dude makes a living with something he loves and people still pay good money to see him, more power to him.

Yngwie is an amazing talent, I would be the first in the stores to buy his new record if he would do such tasty stuff he did on "Little Wing" on the G3 DVD.
I loved what he did with Vai and Satriani, but I was unable to watch his own performance from the same disk. Got bored after the first 10 harmonic minor apreggio runs.
1 thing is for sure, his vibrato is to die for and he play Hendrix like a Motha.....

Always liked his version of Spanish Castle Magic.

Yngwie did in the 80's what Eddie did in the last 70's. Most of the guys that hate him are just jealous asses who can't even DREAM of reaching that level... Yngwie is a great player all-around. He can play Blues, Classical, Rock... even a little Jazz!! When I hear some of these haters play something like "Far Beyond the Sun" or "Blitzkrieg" with the EXACT level of execution and accuracy that Yngwie can... THEN I'll let you bitch about him...

Ethan Brosh is a killer player too. His first album "Out of Oblivion" kicks serious ass. Really cool guy to boot! Good for him for scoring the tour with one of his heroes!!

So by your definition any guitarist that is disliked, it's because of jealousy and not being able to their level.

Unless you can play specific Yngwie tunes, you're not entitled to an opinion.
Not only that but if you don't care for a certain player, you 'hate" them. How dramatic

In most cases yes. I don't hear anybody who can nail Yngwie's tunes, or any stuff at that caliber go "dude, this stuff sucks"...

Never said you had to play specific Yngwie tunes to have an opinion... Same goes for the part where you claim that I stated "you must like a certain player otherwise you hate them instantly" statement. Way to take that out of context deliberately... Bravo. ;)

He should have stopped exactly at 1 minute. The other 7 minutes gets me bored.

I've only caught Yngwie once in a smaller venue in Detroit (St. Andrews Hall) and that was just before Marching Out was released but they played several tracks off of it. The guy blew the roof off of the place and unbelievable command of the instrument.

Its good to see he's still out there kickin ass...one of my biggest influences aside from RR.
