School me on fuzz pedals

Looking to explore a new world, find some imspiration. I'm looking to achieve that singing, violin-like fuzz sound, with lots of sustain and dirt, but retaining clarity. I've been digging on the Lovepedal 200lb Fuzz so far. Any other pedals I should be looking at? Cheaper the better :). On a tight budget, I am.

I know very little about fuzz pedals, so fill
me in. Am I looking for a Dallas-Arbiter type pedal? (the only name I can remember

fuzz pedals are fun...because they consist of hardly any parts, most are widely available and are simple to build.
plenty of online resourses to hold you hand through the build if you have no experience (freestompbox/diy stompbox forum)
ive got clips of a few diffrent fuzzes in my sig...

Silicone Fuzz Faces tend to be a bit brighter and more aggressive than germanium, and they tend to work better live/in a band than germanium. The germanium ones are a little darker/smoother and sound a little better as they clean up (warmer/not as bright).

I've had a couple of boutique Fuzz Faces and the two best ones I've had are both Dunlop (the red germanium one without the 'smile', and the blue Hendrix silicone version). If you're just looking to experiment, I suggest starting with the Hendrix.

Tonebenders have more dirt and midrange than a Fuzz Face. They tend to sound a little boxy on their own, but cut better live/in a band than your typical scooped Fuzz Face. They'll also clean up as you turn down your guitar's volume.

Old school Fuzzes (Fuzz Faces and Tonebenders) don't like buffered signals... so if you use one, put it before any other buffered effects you have going on.

I have a modded Big Muff and it's pretty cool. I think the Dallas Arbiter is a more transparent fuzz but the Big Muff is more compressed like you said and violin like. I have a clip (dug it up from an old chest in the attic) First run through is stock and second run through is the mod circuit. This is into my amp on the clean channel.

You might also dig the Devi Ever Torn's Peaker. Killer fuzz pedals from that chick.

The first thing to do is figure out what type of fuzz you are looking for. When I was looking, I looked at 3 main types of fuzzes:

- Germanium Fuzz Faces
- Silicon Fuzz Faces
- Big Muff

there are a bunch of others like the super fuzz, but I limited myself to those 3. I ended up with a Hartman SI fuzz face and a Big Muff style Blackout effectors Musket. I have had a few big muffs before and of the 2, I prefer the Musket. Although, I used the hartman for playing some Pink Floyd stuff and that was really cool.

OK, so knowing I'm looking for that singing violin-like sound, what should I be looking at? My findings tell me Germanium style, but what do you think?

Probably more like a muff. Listen to siamese dreams by the pumpkins. That the violiny tone youre looking for? Thats a 79 opamp big muff.

Fuzz boxes are extremely easy to build and are a great introduction into DIY pedal building.

Here is a nice kit at a good price.

I do dig the tone on that album.
I like that, and that Eric Johnson singing sustain sound he gets. Check out that rig demo Bonamassa did on MF (it's here on the boards, I'll find the link). Something like that I am interested in.

I really liked the sound of the Lovepedal 200 lbs. of Tone, but I can't seem to find any on the used market.

Remember, the cheaper the better for me right now

Someone is flipping a Subdecay Tomato Fuzz for a good price here. Seems a bit "modern" for what I'm looking for though. Thoughts?

It's not 'traditional', but it's a great pedal.

My membership expired last month...I need to renew one of these days.

I'm digging my Big Muff Pi w/ Tone Wicker. It's a great fuzz with awesome tone and a lot of character. It's a smooth, syrupy fuzz with oodles of violin like sustain and that really cool gnarled up burbling sound when pushing through chords.

Peace,
V.

smooth violin fuzz i cant really help you with but when youre gassing for a huge sounding thick disgusting fuzz to compliment your "nice" sounding one hit me up ill be a plethera of info.

Check out the cool cat fuzz. Very cool and a great value just as all the cool cats are. Im told the Fuzz is a knock off of the Frantone Peachfuzz. I think its around $40

Oh yeah, that 200 Lbs of Tone is just a silicon Fuzz - possibly based off of the Dallas Arbiter Fuzzface

The Dano pedal? I've been looking at them actually. I use a Fish and Chips EQ every time I play, and was looking to get their OCD clone pedal. Maybe I'll order one of the fuzzes on Thursday when I get my check. I'll check it out when I get out of the office in a few minutes

Thanks!
