I like that, and that Eric Johnson singing sustain sound he gets. Check out that rig demo Bonamassa did on MF (it's here on the boards, I'll find the link). Something like that I am interested in.

Both Eric and Joe use Fuzz Faces... and unless I've missed my mark, I think they both use a silicone version (live anyway... in the studio every-thing's game).

I'm digging my Big Muff Pi w/ Tone Wicker. It's a great fuzz with awesome tone and a lot of character. It's a smooth, syrupy fuzz with oodles of violin like sustain and that really cool gnarled up burbling sound when pushing through chords.

Peace,
V.

+1. I still have my '70s black and red BMP, that I purchased new, but it's not at my house. I looked at all the options out there, and gave a few a try, not into the raspy, battery is dying, hacksaw blade fuzz, more into the liquid glass smooth tones. I tried the Big Muff Pi with Tone Wicker (new for around $80 at MF, with the return policy) and I stopped GASing for fuzz. Cheap, and gets the sounds I want...rarely happens to me...very nice for a change! YMMV.

also, check out: http://www.ilovefuzz.com/ and Skin Pimp, fuzzhugger, skreddy, and D*A*M (pricey)...

Do you use the wicker mode? What exactly does that do?

I forget?

I'd have to look it up, but no, I just checked my pedal and both tone and wicker switches are off. I tried all the different settings when I got it, and finally found my fave settings and haven't tweaked it since, or even thought about it. Set and forget:

My settings:

volume: 9 o'clock
tone: noon
sustain: 3 o'clock

both switches off.

I only use it for liquid lead tones.

With wicker mode off it's supposedly the same circuit as the Big Muff Pi (which is what I have) and with the tone switch off it bypasses the tonestack (which is the mod that I performed on my unit) so naturally I am quite interested in this lol. I find it to be a bit more open with more mids with tonestack bypassed. A lot more usable. I think that if the pedal was ever to find a permanent place in my pedalboard though I would need to swap out the diodes with silicon or something with less gain because the stock circuit has far too much gain to be usable and it decimates tone. Still a cool pedal for over the top kinds of sounds.

Ahhhh, they probably got in trouble from frantone for ripping them off too. so they probably changed it to get out of copyright.

That's what I thought, but I've read some stuff online that says the V2's of the other Cool Cat's (the TOD) made slight changes to make it look like they had changed, but they were relatively the same pedals.

I've also heard the opposite as well, so who knows. I guess I'll just try to track down a V1 if I can. I found a V2 for $28 online, great deal. But I don't know if it's going to do what I want it too.

where are you located in IL? I have a muff clone you can try out.

Check out Skreddy pedals. they are pricey and there's a 6 month wait if you buy new, but they sound phenomenal!

Pontiac, about 2 hours south of Chicago.

30 minutes away from Bloomington/Normal

Reading through this thread...... IMO.. the most musical, thick and singing fuzz in the world is the Effector 13 / Devi Ever Soda Meiser.

It has a VERY good and smooth gate so it cuts off any unwanted noise when played.

And trust me.... I went through a "fuzz search" and bought and sold probably 20 - 25 of the biggest named and smallest named fuzzes I could find.

My all-time favorite is what's called "The Golden Rose" - it's another E13 fuzz that was a "one-off" that even Devi doesn't remember what's inside of it. He/she has asked me for it back to "clone" it, but I don't want anyone else to have it.
:D

Carl Martin The Fuzz. I think it's most versatile fuzz ever and can sound as any vintage fuzz or your own style. I have Baja Tech Da Moaf for Muff stuff, Skreddy Zero for heavy and huge rhythm, LAA Pink Wall for smooth lead in Pink Floyd style and Fuzz Factory and LASTGASP ART LABORATORIES Super Oscillo Fuzz 88 for oscillation crazyness. But The Fuzz can sound as all of them at least 95% of tones except Fuzz Factory and Japanese crazy 88 fuzz.

Another nice DIY project.
