School me on Gibson Explorers

There were also runs of Explorers in the early to mid 80's that were alder. They were the ones that didn't have a pickguard and had a different knob layout. I don't know that all of those were, but many of them are.

Newer ones that are Plek'd are great.

I have a Golden Axe like above, and it's a very very good guitar.

For OP, look for a Dethklok Silverburst.

I would like to buy a shred X one of these days, would match my goth perfectly. It was a GOTM. Don't know how good they are or aren't though.

Another alternative is the Hamer USA explorers
+1 in a BIG way. Those are awesome guitars.

So I found one locally. It's a 2002 '76 reissue in excellent condition. It's black with a white pick guard which I don't know how a feel about. Was hoping for something a little different. Any info on this model? price range?

That's the standard explorer model and should be a great guitar. I think Gibson has currently stopped making these, so the prices on ebay probably have gone up some, but if you can get it in the $800-900 range, I think that's a good price. They can go for cheaper if you wait.

I've picked up both of mine for less than 600 each. It's all about being patient and waiting for the right deal.

Easily my favorite guitar.
