The thing sounds like ass

Im taking a gamble because it seemed to have the original Sovtek tubes in it with the exception of one Fender 6L6. I took it out of the headshell and the guts looked perfect with no burns or blemishes in there

Am I crazy to think it could be just tubes???

Nope, could very well be the tubes. Hard to pass up a deal like that for 350. Maybe some new tubes and a proper bias will make it come alive.

replace the tubes and then start getting crazy with ideas of what could be wrong.
some contact cleaner in all the jacks wouldn't hurt either.

You might try a pair of Sylvania 6l6's. I believe that's what came stock in the 5150's the first few years of production. just42dave has them on the classified page for a good price.

lol, no balls...am radio like. No volume, eq knobs made little difference
