Well, it's sad when you get forced into doing what I'm doing, but you can't control everything. A situation came up on my shop/demo room. I had a contractor hired last August to replace the roof on my house and garage, plus the adjoining carport, storage shed, etc.

Well, I caught them trying to charge me for $2500 worth of materials they didn't bring to the job, or planned to install. Due to this, I had to call their head office and work was stopped, the project manager got his butt chewed out, etc.

I'm not sure if he lost his job, but I'm pretty sure he did call the LA County Planning Dept on my property, and we found out the seller of our house did some illegal things we have to take care of.

One was the 3 car carport, illegal, no permit, and shouldn't have been built in the first place. How it got through escrow, I have no idea, but we'll let the title company sort that out and sue the appropriate people.

The down side of it is that I have to dismantle/demolish my carport, storage shed and return the 3 car garage to a garage, meaning my sound proof walls have to come down and the garage door has to function again, or we face a stiff fine.

Since I'm not going to have a completely soundproof room anymore, I'm not going to need all of the demo gear I have, since demos will be limited to only daytime hours, and not whenever a player can show up or if I feel like jamming in the middle of the night to test gear out. It sucks, but it is what it is.

I'm going to be getting a list of all of the gear I'm putting up for sale, which will include lots of speakers, some of my demo guitars, a few amps, and some cabs.

I'll be moving all of it around to make room for the general contractor to get started on Thursday, so I'll have a list ready on Friday afternoon.

Contact me if you would like to get a private email with the list of gear I will be letting go of. Put "List of demo gear" in the subject line, please.

The list won’t be ready until Friday afternoon, at the earliest.

Try to be patient.

Sorry to hear this kind of bs....

I work for an architectural firm and we get calls from time to time where owners flaunted the law, similarly to the former owner of Your home. Typically we get paid a reasonable fee to assess the integrity of the building; structure, life safety, etc. If all good the owner pays a small fine (usually current permit fees) and our office. If something needs repair, owner pays to have it fixed.

Sometimes however things are so poorly constructed, there is no alternative but to take it down. But it sounds like your situation is "....knock that shit down b/c the code officials say so..." Hate it for you dude.

Annnd....wish to hell I had some scratch, I'd buy some gear off ya

Yeah, the whole thing sucks major a$$. I paid about $25k over 8 months to have this thing built and dialed in, and now they're taking out the one wall closest to the alley to make the 2 car garage door functional. We also had to install gates in the alley to allow access to both garage doors (2 car & 1 car), even though I have two parking spots behind the gates, plus the three in the carport (soon to be history).

When this is all done I'll be able to park 7 cars in back behind the house.

Great...except I have nowhere to test out a 100w Marshall with four 4x12's anymore.

Word of caution, do not ever use Home Depot as your supplier/contractor for work.

If I understand correctly you bought the property form someone else. And surely as strict as Cali is the house passed all inspections prior to home loan closing.

Additionally and, to me more importantly, you bought a property that had an enclosed room (repurposed garage space). That's what you should be allowed to have. You could argue that your property value will significantly go down as a result of someone else's miscue. You're getting screwed dewd!

You may be tired of fucking with this already, but IMO, you have got to have some other recourse...other than renovate it, back to a garage. There may be some generous statute of limitations in play, or something I'm jus t not getting, but yea....this don't seem right.

Annnd, if the dick contractor turned you in, he should have his license pulled. JMO. :gethim:

I'm not going to go into it all. I've researched the options, consulted a real estate attorney. The solution is to fix the issues, turn it into the title insurance company (we don't have clear title to the property until the zoning enforcement violations are corrected), they go after the seller (and his real estate girlfriend who listed the property) and they have to pay us back. Or we sue him for fraud if that doesn't work out.

Either way, we have until the end of the month to correct the issues, but it's not how I would have chosen to spend $12k, especially after all the money I poured into that 3 car garage five years ago.

Next house we get, we're building...the only way to get it done right.

Hope you at least get your "investment" back.

People are just crooked as shit....some anyway. Sorry to ambush your thread. :aww:

C'mon...somebody buy some great gear from this man!

Jim, sorry about your rotten luck. I posted this over at the Gear Page. I did not link to here, but I can if you want.

Thanks very much. I already started a thread on the TGP about it, but I appreciate yours as well. It's not the end of the world, my wife and I have the money to fix this crap. I just won't be able to go rock out with my c0cK out whenever I want at any volume I want. I also won't be able to have the gear as secure as I'd like it, even with double doors, locks and an alarm system.

Nothing like two foot thick walls in place to keep people out of your stuff, right?

What really pisses me off is I didn't do anything but catch HD trying to fraud me, and I get rewarded with this mess.

We'd done around $90k worth of business with HD over 14 years, including a major remodel of our townhome in San Pedro, and this place. To think they would purposely try to screw us and then call the LA County on the property was incredible.

Imagine this...it's late September 2015, hot as hell here, and an LA County Inspector knocks on your door with two armed/bulletproof jacket wearing LAPD officers behind him with their hands on their guns.

"Hello, we got an anonymous tip to inspect this property. Will you let us look around willingly or do we have to get a warrant to do so?"

Pissed, uh, yeah, you could say I'm pissed.

That is some serious s#!t there...on more than one level. Best of luck getting things taken care of in a decent timeframe.

I've been dealing with it since I got the official "zoning violation letter" last November, right before Thanksgiving. You have to understand that this carport and storage shed have been here since the 60/70's (house was built in 64) according to some of the neighbors who have lived here that long.

That carport and storage shed didn't just become a problem until I caught HD committing fraud. Then "an anonymous tip" brought everyone here.

Can I prove it? Of course not.

Do you have to be a rocket scientist to figure it out? Of course not.

And the building and safety dept here in LA? Puhlease. They have no clue what they're doing. I've had the soundproofed garage called "a storage structure", a "guest house", and "living quarters" in three separate emails and letters. I'm even going on my 3rd investigator for this case since November at the end of this month. They change jobs/positions and leave it to the next person every six weeks to handle.

Like I said, the next house, which will be built in Nevada above Reno, will be done right...and without any question about what's to code, cuz I'm going to build it way past code like I did the demo room/shop.

As for the police and the investigator...yeah, that's some serious crap that "anonymous tipster" pulled. I hope that project manager lost his job, but to be honest, that whole division out here in LA is crooked...or at least the five managers, one sales rep and one contractor I've worked with so far on this since August.

Ok, I'm ranting...sorry! I'm going to go play some guitar if I can, assuming I don't snap the neck off in my fury! LOL

Sorry to hear. Rest assured, as painful as this is now to deal with the previous sellers, agents and title company you used and maybe the previous title co will be held accountable. Thats why title insurance is so important.

I'm not the sharpest knife in the drawer, but I think what you're saying is it's a no good, unfair, dirty, crooked assed, bullshit racket like everything else. All about money and getting back at people. Figures. I'm sorry for your troubles, Jim. If I weren't tapped out I'd look at buying some of your gear. This is off topic, but I'm absolutely loving the M75-PVCs I bought from you! Those damn speakers are awesome!!

So much for your rights as a property owner. Sounds like government out of control.... so sad.

Hello to everyone who emailed me about the “list of demo gear”

I’m working through this rather immense pile of gear, and only gotten part way. I expect to be done with the speaker list later today, guitars, amps and cabs tomorrow.

Rather than post a partial list, I’m going to post it when it’s done.

Sorry to be late, but the contractors were here far later than I thought yesterday, and I’d already had dinner plans with my wife I couldn’t put off for listing gear.

I’ll post it as soon as I finish it, sorry for the delay.

In reply to the warrant questions, there was no warrant needed, I didn't have anything on the property to hide. My guess is the asshat who called the LA County Planning inferred I may have a drug/meth lab or some such illegal activity at my place just to be an ass. I readily showed my entire place to the inspector and the two police man. They were impressed with the 14 stacks of Marshalls & Scumback cabs I had in the demo room, and realized the "tip" was done by someone who had an axe to grind (or a paycheck to lose).

No lawyers needed, we'll leave that to the title company to get resolved. I didn't contract for any illegal work or buildings. That was done by the previous owners of the property.

Ok, enough explaining, I've got about 40 speakers to identify, date codes, cone codes, type/model, etc. Then there will be guitars, amps, and cabs.

I have to say, some of this is making me a little ill that I have to let this go, but if you don't have secure climate controlled storage for the gear, and only 1/10th of it fits (or is welcome!) in your house, you put the rest up for sale.

Bear with me, this is more time consuming than I thought, and mentally depressing, too.

Have a good Saturday evening.

Jim

Really sorry Jim! You and yours don't deserve one bit of this.

Yep, it blows, G. I'm almost done with the extra speakers... 12 pre rolas with original cones, plus 27 others. 39 in total.

Then there's the rest of the gear to list. I thought I'd be done in an hour...LOL. Been at it for 2.5 hours, and only just getting the speakers done/sorted/categorized.

Sometimes being a gear whore is way more work than you think it is.

You should find out what exactly was said to the county. For them to show up w/bulletproof vests and armed suggests that the 'info' they got was extreme and dangerous. Get phone records through an attorney and sue the caller, who is employed by the contractor. Own the company in the end.

Knowing Jim I would bet he did all of this. He even contemplated violence  We're talking CA here too. CA building regulations are a bitch from what I understand. I'm sure he is doing what the best options are. Basically he's screwed. Sucks what they have the power to enforce. Tear it down or pay us a 25K fine and then you can keep it.
