The "tip" was anonymous. The LA County guarantees the caller's anonymity. You can't sue to get the info as they have laws against it, kind of like 911. It's not a crime in LA to report something you think is illegal. Obviously something more was said by this "tipster" for armed police to show up. And yes, I already contacted a real estate attorney about what I could do to save the demo room, but no go. Due to the layout of the garage on the lot, it's too close to the property line setbacks to keep a "rumpus room" or "studio" without cutting the garage back 5 more feet and losing the 1 car portion of the garage.
And getting a variance on the lot is roughly $8-10k worth of hearings, inspections, forms, paperwork, plot plans and drawings, plus demolition and reconstruction.
I'm just going to lose the soundproof room, period, along with it's secure storage. Of course I'll be able to do something to deaden the volume but there's nothing like 2 feet of wall, R30 insulation, four layers of drywall (overlapping) with Green Glue soundproofing in between each drywall layer.
Trust me, I went to LA County Planning, & Building and Safety four times late last year to try to figure a way out, and there just isn't one.
And facing a $733 fine per day till it's corrected isn't an option, I don't have that money to thumb my nose at the County.
I appreciate the concern, and suggestions, though, really. I just wish there was something I (or those that posted here) hadn't thought of already.
