SD1 standard or Waza?? for boosting my JCM800

I need an overdrive to add some gain and compression and egde to my JCM800 2205....SD1 standard or Waza version? I play 80's hardrock
 
Never tried the Waza. The SD-1 standard should be fine though. It's been my go-to OD for a long time now.

Not sure how it will work with the 2205 given the diode clipping involved in that amp. Someone with more experience with that particular amp may be able to give more insight.

I've had a few of those, and they tend to not like boosts too well on the lead channel. If you drop the gain back on the amp a boost will work ok. But you can boost the normal channel just fine. Problem is if you run the gain down on the lead channel it thins out the tone some.
I had good luck with just a little bump from an EQ pedal on the lead channel...it doesn't need much. Schenker I've read boosts the normal channel for rhythm.
Of the ones I've had and kept, gain on 10 lead channel was a perfect 80s hard rock rhythm. Little eq pedal mid bump for leads..good stuff.
 
I use an OD1X, it won't suck the low end out and will actually add some into your tone. I do like the SD1, never had the Waza version.
 
I've been using an EH Soulfood with mine. I tried OCD, Shiba Reloaded, '82 TS-9 and the SD-1. I run the lead channel with the gain around half way up.
 
The standard SD-1 cuts alot of your low end, which isn't always a a bad thing as it tightens up the loose low end and boost the mids. I recommend the newer Maxon OD808 reissues which keep more of your lowend end in tact but still tightens thing up, I prefer it to the SD-1 in front of any Marshall or Modded Marshall but YMMV between the two because your ears might prefer something else. Here are the main differences between and SD-1 and OD808 pedal.

Boss SD-1- asymmetrical clipping(diodes) JRC4558 opamp Chip(smoother warmer tube like distortion)
Maxon OD808- symmetrical clipping(diodes) JRC4558 opamp chip(still warm tubelike distortion but a little more grit and grind to it)

I have a custom boutique OD808 pedal that lets me switch between symmetrical and asymmetrical and there is a difference in the clipping tones, even with that I did buy an actual Maxon OD808 and use the shit of of it, it just sounds great grinds nicely and tightens things up nicely in front of my Splawn modded 2203. Sometimes I like the grind and sometimes smoother works best also I using these all a a clean boost to an already overdriven amp. If you aready have a grindy amp then the asymmetrical can smooth thing out, like Skid Row using the SD-1 in front of the Rivera RM-100 which is a very grindy gritty amp to give you a reference tone.

You could get both and then decide which one you like the best and return the other one or get and boutique build that has a switch between SD-1 mode and 808 mode if you like both tones and want an option.
 
for the 2205 you will get best results with a boost with bass and treble controls like a Bad Monkey or Fulltone Fat Boost. Then run the amp's gain around 2 o'clock to leave the diodes out and use the pedal eq to restore the fullness and cut.
 
Try a Seymour Duncan 805 too --- it works like a sd1 or tube screamer into a 800 and has bass & treble controls that actually works - can sound quite muscular if need be ----- I'm currently using a OCD into my jubilee with great results
 
Schenker looks like he uses one of the Ibanez TS variants.. by the look of it, just a TS-9. I would look at his and John Norum's amp settings and go from there. Any neutral sounding boost (even with slight mid) or an EQ pedal should do what you want.

Zakk Wylde OD. You'll thank me later... I used one with great results with the 2205 I had.

Or, for something with EQ controls and a little more neutral, I'd go with a TC Spark Booster. Love that pedal.

Or, better yet, try an EQ.. MXR 10-band, or a GE-7, for a little more grit.

Don't bother getting the Waza version. I did and it was always in the standard mode up until I sold it. It sounded ok. For my Marshall JMP 2204 from 1982 I like the Rockbox Boiling Point and the Suhr Shiba Reloaded the best.
You can also try the Suhr Koko Boost or the Friedman Buxxom Boost. The two best boost pedals out there.
 
i have a 2210, get the standard SD and a Friedman Buxom Boost, run the gain on lead channel 7-8, add a little gain with the SD, boost with the Friedman=heaven.
 
When I was using a jcm800 I used a sd1 and also a Maxon od808 in front, I thought it was perfect
 
My fav pedals for boosting Marshalls are the MXR ZW OD, and the Fulltone OCD.
