Hi guys,

Right now I'm using my 2204 with a DS-1 clone in front of it and it sounds awesome, but I would like to have a amp that can do that and a lot more without a pedal.

Should I be looking at the CCV? Or Friedman? Or Fortin?

I'm really looking for a 2203 with more gain and bottom + more possibilities. Not too tight!

Any advice?

I'm looking for a Mastodon type of sound without any pedals.

Isn't Tommy Folkesson? in your part of Europe. The vids of his mods have been fantastic.
I've been very impressed with the clips of his mods. This is the route I would go if I were in Europe.

Send it to Dan Gower in the UK for a Cali mod!
This, absolutely

I'm thinking a QuickRod too

If for some reason I don't like the CCV but I don't think that will happen, I'll be buying another Quickrod instead.

+2

Folkesson doesn't like to accept shipped amplifiers, only local drop offs. If the OP is looking to purchase a pre-modded amp, then Tommy is another great choice.

Cheers,
Mike

Yeah Tommy only accepts local drop offs or will sell you a modded Laney which is very cool.

If you want 800 modded give Dan a buzz.

Mastodon uses fuzz pedals into a JCM800 to get their tones... why would you want an amp that does that sound by itself? It would likely sound pretty bad if it did. I would modify the amp if you are able to solder. I think a lot of the popular modifications are very easy to do and have a great effect on the sound since it's such a simple circuit. Do you have a Big Muff?

Ive spent plenty of time around Bill and Brents rigs and I can tell you that this isnt even close to true. An 800 with a Big Muff wont get you anywhere near Mastodons tone. If you want Mastodons tone/ 800 with more gain , look into the Kerry King 800 . Thats what Bill is using . It is a straight 2203 with a built in boost function. Sounds great. Bill goes straight in , no pedals . They just got an Orange deal , but neither one of them are actually using Orange live. Brent is using a Diezel VH4 for all of his high gain and a stock JMP 2203 for his mid gain stuff. I cant reccomend the 2203KK enough though , they can be found for cheap too!

Im not saying you are wrong, but I am referencing their recording history. All of their albums except for the latest one has used a JCM800 with a modified BMP or Ibanez Tube King distortion pedal in front. They have gone on record saying this a few times.

Friedman.

Isnt that clip boosted though?
Yup, but the gain on the OD is only open about 1/3rd. With or without a boost the amp will get you there.

I can second the Orange and VH4 thing. I run into them sometimes at Smashbox (practice space) and I shot the shit with them on a photo shoot for Orange Amplification. For live use at least, it's VH4 and Marshall.

1. Marshall Vintage Modern
2. Marshall Kerry King JCM800
3. Ceriatone Chupacabra (50 or 100)
4. Splawn Quick Rod

Hummmmmmm...........a 2203 with more gain. Can't believe nobody's thought of that yet. You could possibly use the search function and see if the "mod squad" have ever done that. It may be a stretch though.....
