More quality stuff from John. I personally am not jealous of his playing, tone, or ability to bed pretty much any woman, which I think is great because it allows me to objectively appreciate someone who is clearly a great musician. Tons of jealous hate for John that I just dont understand. The dude has great chops and is clearly having a great time playing music he loves. Wheres the problem?

+10 I just don't get it. He is average at best.

eh.. I like it, at least the guy is making a living doing what he loves, while I sit here in my little dungeon on my computer, surrounded by Marshalls that may never see the light of day

another hit album for the guy, man, that dude knows how to write catchy songs!

this is from the "secret-private" show at the Troubadour a few weeks back. The song's called Perfectly Lonely.

The singing is a bit icky, you can tell it's still not on the pocket, but still. I really dig the guitar tone on the solo (obviously you gotta go past the cel phone recording>youtube compression)

Btw, according to John, this record won't be Blues based, it's more rock oriented.

Do you post this everywhere? Are you a part of his street team or something?

Yeah...I noticed the same exact thing. I never get why people feel the need to prove that their a fan of someone by posting on a forum that generally hates that particular artist. :aww:

Well I dont read every guitar forum on the net, basically just this one. So at least Im glad he posts this stuff every where. I dont think hes trying to show that he's a super fan, but rather just sharing it with everyone. Some will like it some will not. Not to derail but I havent thought Ozzy was relevant since No More Tears but I dont go posting in threads about whichever new wannabe biker Viking is his new guitar player.

If you guys dont like John Mayer, whats the point of even clicking into John Mayer threads? Other than to start some shit for fun :)

For a guy who is just "average at best", he sure has the respect of many of the greats including Clapton, BB King, and Buddy Guy to name a few. You generally dont get invited to play with those guys if you are a hack.

Out of curiosity for the haters, who from Mayer's generation would you say does what he does better?

EWSethan, couldn't have said it better myself. Thank you

I think is freedom of posting. I can post whatever I want since it's a MUSIC forum, and the last time I checked J.M. was a musician correct?

The J.M. haters, feel free to pass on the thread. But for some reason they don't, it's like a drug to come in here and bash the guy.

The secret to John Mayers success besides the catchy songs and great playing, is as Donald Trump said once about himself: Bad publicity is still publicity, and I think that applies to Mayer. Lots of haters lots of people talking crap, but in the mean time they are fueling the overall image of the artist.

For the person that likes catchy pop songs or washed up blues (as some say Mayer plays) a comment from a hater saying his voice sucks, his playing is bland, etc etc...won't change the way he percieves Mayer, if anything it'll make that person curious as to why are people saying what they're saying hence a possible new fan.

In my particular case, I AM a Mayer fan(boy?), because thanks to him I took my metal earplugs and went into another direction completely which has help me improve my playing tenfold!, I starting listening to Clapton, Hendrix, ZZ Top, BB King, Buddy Guy, Wes Montgomery, Muddy W., John Coltrane, among other great artists that I didn't used to listen to before discovering Mayer. Was I living under a rock? No, but I had the "metal mindset" that if it wasn't heavy I didn't like.

Same with my playing, I started playing bluesier stuff, more pop stuff, less higain shit, and started appreciating my instrument a bit more.

So again man, I post whatever I want, and there are people that enjoy it, even if it's the 0.5% of the forum, I don't care.

I also do it to piss people like you off.

and I'll say it again, TO ME, IN MY HUMBLEST OPINION, John Mayer is a musical genious, not because he's the best at his instrument, although he's VERY good, but because he knows exactly WHAT TO DO to make his music likable and digestible without being crap music. To me he'll be (is already slowly becoming) the next Clapton. Let' wait a few more decades and we'll see.

Mayer will be remembered amongst the Claptons whether people are ready to admit it or not. As his catelog grows and he continues to mature further away from the acoustic pop of his first album, he will be more remembered as a seasoned blues pop artist rather than a singer songwriter pretty boy.

Joey, Im the same way. Mayer and SRV really got me into playing more blues. Your next stop, Country! Check out Keith Urban's latest album. SO GOOD!

yeah but again, where's dereck trucks compared to Mayer?

that's why these forums are full of frustrated guitarist and musicians man. You all wanna go for the most skilled instead of getting to the people. I could care less if Green Day only plays 3 chord songs, they are doing something they like and they're getting it out there. At the end EVERY fucking musician would give a right arm to be playing every night in front of 15,000 people, and whoever says no, is a liar.

Not EVERY one would joey, I for one would not. For one I am perfectly happy playing at home with my friends or alone. Also I have a family to tend to which is why I gave up the band thing 10 years ago.
Plus the music that Mayer and Green Day(perfect example) play does not appeal to me one bit so why would I want to play music I hate for 15000 people? I would rather play music I love for 30.

Yep, that would be nice, but at the end of the day most guys on this forum look to technique an innovation as a means of expression, and I myself although dont hate the guy, consider what he's doing like lukewarm water. Not hot, not cold, nothing new, is what it is kinda player. He's commercially viable. He's a nice guy in interviews. He's got some views an politics and generally seems a nice, sincere guy with warm lyrics. And, thats that. But there's gotta be dozens of guys over the years that would smack him up and down for the same blues singer/songwriter context that gain more popularity around here for the skills. Kotzen, for example. So, around here, you sink...

Everyone is naming players I like such as Kotzen, Bonamassa, and Trucks and I would agree that probably all of them are better players than Mayer. But its not apples to apples. These guys are not pop artists who dabble a little in bringing accessible blues and jazz to the masses. They are niche players.

I just think that the people that dont like Mayer have deluded themselves into thinking its because hes not a good player, when its really rooted in something else. Maybe its jealousy, maybe not. Maybe you dont like pop music or even his style of pop music, and thats FINE. But to say hes not a good player (at least better than avergae) is foolish when the guy can hold his own on a stage next to Clapton and Buddy Guy.
